Wenaha West Archery Bull Tag
« on: June 17, 2011, 07:09:42 PM »
Just found out that I drew an archery bull tag for the Wenaha West Sept. 1-19. I have never been down that way and would appreciate any info willing to be shared as I start to scout and plan for this hunt. From what I gather it is wicked country with some wicked bulls to go with it!

It's some tuff country for sure. There is some great bulls in there and there has been a few taken by members here. I would do a search and check out some of the posts from years past.

First of all make sure you are in the best shape o your life. Then I would buy a hiking book with all the trails listed. They will dicribe miliage and elevation changes stuff like that. I have hiked in for tipee trail and head into indian coral and have had luck with seeing some big bulls. Put every thing you have into it, do the scouting. You got the hard Part out of the way now go kill a big one.

My brother and I drew as a partnership and will be packing meat together. Great tip on the guide book for trails and mileage. My initial thought is thinking about getting as deep as I can and hunting from there. Anxious to get an eye on the country!

Download google earth and you can get some pretty good close up images of the country. Im telling you there is no better scouting tool than google earth, not to mention you can print off pictures for mini maps that are actual photos taken in 2009 I think.

Been going in the west unit several times a year for 18 years now.  You  can harvest a 380-400 within a mile of the road assuming nobody got him last year.  I have seen him the last three years on the same point every time.  He hangs out in the same area every september.

Teepee and Indian Corral are in the Tucannon unit, not Wenaha.

Love to know what road that is off Daytonite! I don't want to tell anyone how many points it took for fear everyone will quit chatting. Truly lucky, 2 points this go around!
Any insight on rut in the blues? Early/Late? Also what seems to be more productive, bull or cow calling?

No offense, mtman, but if you're going through Indian Corral to get to Diamond Peak from Teepee you're taking the long way. Maybe it's a terminology thing and you call it this and I call it that, but I always thought the Teepee Trail leaves from the Teepee campground north towards Indian Corral. Diamond Peak is due east of the Teepee campground. Maybe I have my trail names mixed up and the trail between Teepee campground and Diamond Peak is the Teepee trail, but either way, going through Indian Corral to get to Diamond Peak is the super long way.
Maybe we're both half right/half wrong and someone will correct us. I could dig my maps out too I guess.
