Texas Pig Hunt (20-23 June)
« on: June 23, 2011, 10:39:56 AM »
Just got back from a Texas Pig hunt. Had a good time.

Weather was around 100 degrees with a loud thunderstorm one night. Ruined about 5 hours of hunting.  Saw lots of Whitetails in velvet, very dinky deer. Ton of Turkeys, Pigs, Aoudads, Whitetail Deer, Axis Deer. There is also lots of exotic hunts down there. Ranches importing different animals from Africa, China, etc. (Kudu, Bongo, Waterbuck, Pere David, etc.). Went on a Raccoon killing spree, 3 in 30 minutes. They were trying to steal all the corn from the feeder. Damn thieves.

Bringing home the meat and processing it. Can't wait to taste some, all of the pigs I shot were smaller sows, so the should be tasty. :)

Very cool.  If you don't mind me asking, did you use a guide or a ranch or what?  I will be in Texas at the beginning of August and I am looking to do a hog hunt while I am there.  Any info you could pass on to me would be greatly appreciated.

I plan on doing the same thing here in the not too distant future,  but I wouldn't do it in august!!

June cutting it pretty late, pigs be pretty infested with bugs by then. Your pigs looked pretty lean, they stink bad?

Anyways my bro married a TX gal,  so I'm invited out anytime I guess to a big ranch w pigs.   Kinda funny how they do things down there vs up here in WA.

ya and "dinky deer" about sums it up  :chuckle:

Yep, all there are down there are 'big ranches.' You think hunting is a rich mans sport in WA with all the national forest you should try it where you have to pay tresspass fees everytime you step out of the truck.

I would probably not go down in August either, to hot and the pigs are likely to have fleas, etc. But if you have to go, you have to go. Next time I would go down would be in the fall when it is cooler and no leaves on the trees.

My pigs did not have a funky smell or fleas. The bigger boars did smell a bit. The pig on the truck was fairly fat but the other one was lean. Even with all the corn feeders, they were some really wild pigs.

I brought home 50lbs of meat. Should taste good.

The deer were incredibly small, especially considering how big there racks are suppose to get down there.

Were you looking at Coues deer? You should see how tiny they get in AZ.
