thinking of getting a 44mag

im going to be purchasing a revolver in the next month or so, and im pretty set on the ruger blackhawk in 44mag, but, ive seen some others out there, the ruger super redhawk looks good, but im not a fan of double action. when i think of revolvers, my mind instantly goes to the rugers but i know there is many other manufactures out there. what would be some other guns to consider? i want to hunt with it (island deer mostly), and im looking to have it be something to carry around in the backwoods... 44mag seems to be the right cartridge for around here... id love some input

The 44mag will work great for deer and bear. I like the 454 casull a little better myself, I have shot the black hawks and super reds. I like the way the super redhawks shoot a lot better and like the grip a lot better as well. Double action is nice and has it's advantages over the single. Tough to go wrong with a .44 mag SA.  Especially Ruger.  I've owned them and have been shooting them and packin' 'em for near 40 years now and never had one let me down.  I've killed so many grouse, deer, elk, bear, coyotes and a multitude of other critters that I couldn't list them.  I never wanted for more power simply because I've never recovered a cast bullet from an elk, they all exited.  Tough to need more oomph than that.

yeah i was watching a youtube review of the 454 casull and they were saying it can also shoot the 45lc as the 44mag can do 44special, can anybody back that up?

I've had several (still have three of them) 44 revolvers and it comes down to what you are going to use if for.  When I'm going to be doing a lot of walking, I pack the 4" S&W 329.  Really light, and shoots VERY well!  If I'm hunting I have my old trusty 10 1/2" Super Blackhawk.  (It has whacked 13 deer and 2 elk  for me over the years).  I put different grips on it about 25 years ago.  I have an old 629 that just feels nice to me and I see no reason to sell it.

I've always wanted a 454 Casull, but it's hard to find one that I want without a muzzle brake.  I don't like muzzle brakes.  I do believe you are right about the 45 LC in the 454, but I've got no experience with it.

You are pretty much toast if you are rolling around on the ground with a bear

But if you find yourself there.....

Just make sure that the front sight on your pistol is ground down so that when the bear shoves it up your a$$, it won't hurt so bad

Yes you can shoot 45lc threw the 454casull. I shoot a raging bull in 454 casull it has been a good gun. I still have a few guns that I like better then it. I will make you a good deal if you want it

My friend has a 44mag 4 5/8'' Ruger Blackhawk. It shoots great and my friend loves it! I like to shoot it too, though the recoil get old to me after about 10 or 15 rounds. I went with the Ruger Blackhawk in .357 mag in 4 5/8''. I can stack shots on top of each other with that .357. I love the blackhawk, as it is very tough, and very dependable and very accurate! I vote Blackhawk!

what about a 460 S&W?  I think you can shoot 454 Casull and 45 LC thru them.  I'd stick with the Blackhawk though.  I've got two, great guns.

Back when there was a time I owned only one .44, I split the difference.  I had a 5 1/2" model.  The best of both worlds, short enough to not get in the way on ones belt, long enough to aide in accuracy.

Now days I use 2 different barrel lengths.  A 4 5/8" model for a 'perfect packin pistol' and a 7 1/2" when out hunting with the pistol exclusively.  While I use the shorter barrel for a trail gun and companion gun mostly, it turns out that since it is on my belt all the time, the 4 5/8" version ends up bringing home more game than the 7 1/2" Blackhawk.

I've got a s&w 629 4 inch.  Love it.  Just like in Rasbo's pic, except shorter barrel and half the lug.  Galco phoenix holster and belt, which I can have in the standard or cross draw position.  Kick isn't that bad.

yeah, i plan on it being something to keep on my hip when back packing/hiking, fishing, camping, and so forth, but i also want to have it be long enough incase i see a deer or something at range... the 4 5/8" barrel seems too small... the 7.5 would be good, and the 10 incher would be good if i was going to scope it and use it as a dedicated hunting/target pistol....

  the 10 is too big, and the 4 5/8 too short i think.. guess that just leaves the 7.5" barrel or the 5 1/2"... i think i just need to go fondle a pistol or two.

on an unrelated issue, know of anybody who would be interested in a lightly used, like-new saiga (ak action) in .223? i never shoot it, and its not a very good brush gun, so i dont have a need for it beyond the novelty of having a semi auto .223 rifle.... its going to contribute to the blackhawk fund... (yeah yeah i know, classifieds, right? lol)

another thing to consider is the black hawk will be lighter, so a longer barrel will way less with them.  I like the black hawk hunters quite a bit myself.  I do like the 44mag but i have been leaning towards 45LC more lately.  I have the smith and wesson mountain gun (4" double action) in 45 LC and it is my carry gun for the woods.  I shot a 255-260 grain cast load that I got from this website http://handloads.com/articles/default.asp?id=12    I think in the article it pretty much says it all when mentions that once you get full penatration anything else is kinda wasted.  John linbaugh also has an article on his website about the loads you can run in the super black hawk that give you even more power.  one of the reason I like the 45LC is with the 260 grain cast load at 950-1000 ft per second.  my ten year old daughter was able to pop of all six rounds and ask for more.   the smith and wesson needs to be kept around 1000 ft per second due to construction but the black hawk and serious be hopped up.  I know you said 44mag just throwing out another option.

Don't do it! Don't fall victim to the .429 Mag!

I've had a couple of 44 mags, but none of them stuck around for very long. I'm partial to the 45 Colt. No good reason though since the 44 mag is a great round. Even though is only .429 caliber.

I just got my first 44 mag. I ended up getting the S&W Model 629 classic with the 6.5" barrel and full underlug.

I put 50 rounds through it this weekend, and it is a shooter! It is more accurate than I am. Handles and points well, and recoil was not an issue. I am very pleased with my purchase.

I've had a S&W 629 in 6" for 25 years.  That is an outstanding revolver.  I love it. Just my opinion.

Carried a 629 Classic 5in barrel.  Best handgun I ever held and I've lost count, had so many sometimes I see a gun and remember oh yeah I had one of those
