Hell's Canyon

Here are some photos from a Hell's Canyon in 07.  Quality is so so... sorry.  There were some big fires down there then.  If memory serves me the first photo is of Wild Goose rapid.  The photo really doesn't give a good perspective on how truly big this rapid is.... we were in a 28' Bentz w/ twin deisels and it still felt like were were almost totally at the mercy of the river.

Correction on the rapid...  it's not Wild Goose it's Wild Sheep or maybe Granite.    Both those are class IV/V rapids.

I've never been down the Grand Canyon but my whitewater guide buddy has rowed it a couple times and has told me that Wild Sheep and Granite are both Grand Canyon rapids in size and verosity.  I've only rafted some class III stuff on the Salmon so these seemed massive to me.  They actually sunk 1 of those massive 30+' jet tour boats in Granite about a week before we went through there.

No thanks. Did the deschutes in oregon. Damn near drowned and got strainded in the middle of a class 4 rapids sitting on a rock. Took 2 hrs to get back up to me. The guy driving the train was nice enough to wave.LOLOL As he was laughing his ass off.

Well I thought I would be brave and ride all the big waves on the front of the pontoon holding on front and back. But when crest over the wave and are looking straight down at the bottom of the wave you best not open your mouth or you will fill up when the wave slams you. I got knocked off the top of the pontoon 3 times but was able to hang on. But you can't beat the beauty of the Grand Canyon. Hiked it before but the ultimate is the 188 mile ride!! The big one is Hermit Rapids rated a 10. They rate theirs different down there on a scale of 1-10, But alot of it is what danger the rapid potentially have.

I regularly took my jet skis up those rapids out of Lewiston all the way up.  I didn't have to go through the center of the rapids and could go around in calmer water.  It was fun though...

I have no idea about hells canyon, but the Deschutes sure has some stuff that SHOULD frighten you.  That river is frickin awesome.

Wow.... really?  I didn't think they would give you a permit for a jet ski up there.  Did you launch at Pittsburg Landing?  The rapids I'm talking about are like 65 miles upriver from Heller Bar.... way up above the confluence of the Salmon.

It has been a while since I have been up the river, but that does not look like Wild Goose @ mile marker 173, five miles above Hellar Bar.   If it is Wild Sheep.....Oh Ya  big water.   Cool Places up there.

No... definitely not Wild Goose.  Got my "Wilds" mixed up.  It is Wild Sheep (maybe Granite) way up there near the dam.  I've run my boat through Wild Goose.  I wouldn't think about running Wild Sheep.

I think it is Pittsburg landing...  It's the one at the confluence of the Tucannon and Snake.  Sometimes we would put in at Lewiston and then fuel up at Pittsburg landing.  Sometimes we would put in at Pittsburg and run up from there.  The biggest problem we had was I had a range of about 70-80 miles.  I had to strap on 5 gallon gas cans on the back of the jet ski to make it home sometimes...

One time my buddy and his girlfriend were riding my second jet ski and there is a good sized rapid down below Pittsburg landing.  we were jumping the huge rapids and his girlfriend fell off the back of the jet ski...    I raced towards her through the rapid, grabbed her hand and hauled her to the shore.  It was a real close call.  I'm not sure if someone can make it alive down some of those rapids.  

I'm not sure the names of the rapids.  I'm not sure where the actual "Hells Canyon" area starts.  I know I went up past the confluence of the Salmon at least 15 miles...?  (about to where the road from White Bird comes down to the river)  I went up the Salmon at least 20 miles from the confluence...?  (I didn't ever make it as far as White Bird)  Not sure if it was legal or if I needed a permit.  (alcohol+youth=stupidity)  It was 1996-2000 and I was in college at the time...  I remember one time there was a forest fire up the Snake and they were fighting it and I was right in the middle of it.  I have hiked up parts of Hells Canyon and I know I didn't make it up as far as I hiked in my jet ski...  I'll have to look on a map for more details when I get home from work.

Pope, I may have seen you up there on your ski.  That is about when I had to quit the rough water stuff....thought you guys were crazy..having fun, but crazy.  I have seen some bad boat wrecks.

Have you guys seen the steel ring in the rock just above Wild Goose?  It is on the Washington side.

Must be Pittsburg. That's the 1 on the ID side that you come into from White Bird.   There's 1 on the OR side call Dug Bar or something like that but it's a real bear to get into from what I've been told.   

Doesn't the Tucannon run into the Snake down by Little Goose Dam?  Maybe you're thinking of the Imnaha river.... it runs into the Snake between Pittsburg and the confluence of the Salmon.

You got some stones to go through those buggers on jet ski

I completely spaced it...I meant the Grand Ronde not the Tucannon.  My bad.  Not sure what the landing and launch is called there...  There is a boat ramp and a little store and gas there.  It's about a 20 mile run or so up from Lewiston...

I wouldn't go through the center of most these rapids.  They would have killed me.  Oftentimes I would go right up the shore in 2" of water...
