 Never put in for this before and am trying to understand what applies. It states you can hunt in any unit not closed by the Commission with any legal weapon in any open season. Theoretically, could you hunt say Mission GMU with modfire in late September, or early November?

yes...any unit that is open for any hunt any time during the season is open from beginning of early archery till dec 31 with whatever weapon you choose.
