Request help with peaches ridge
« on: July 10, 2011, 11:23:02 AM »
I just got archery tag, big bull, for peaches ridge. Need help - never hunted there, never been there. I am from east WA, hunted this side and ID mostly. Any help would be great - tips on area, trails, campsites, pics would be great too, of bulls and area. Thanks

Two words GOOGLE EARTH!!!  Learn it, like it, live it.  Then also get yourself some Topo maps and memorize that thing.  Elk are the same everywhere.  Look for a place that has North facing heavily timbered slopes (Bedding area), a place with a saddle or bowl (travel corridor) and a basin with some meadows (feeding) and you'll be set.  After you pick out some likely spots you want to check out by doing your map and Google Earth Reconnaisance then go out and wear out some boot leather to check if the elk are actually there.  Look for sign, you dont' have to actually see elk to know they are there.  Although late July early August is a great time to go up and scout.  The bulls will still be in bachelor groups and they are not gonna be in the thick stuff yet because their antlers are still covered in sensitive velvet.  That will give you an idea on what's out there.

As far as where to go??  I would stick to the Little Naches side of that GMU and definately go into the Norse Peak wilderness part.  GMU 346 is a general season so you're gonna want to get away from the crowd.  Go where most people are not willing to go.  Make sure you are in good shape, practise calling and bring a buddy.  If you have the money I'd recommend contacting Norsepeak on here since he is a guide.  He will be a great asset.  Just an FYI since your first post ever on here is asking for advice I wouldn't expect anyone to tell you much more than what I just told you.  Too many people come on here asking for help, get the help and never come back.   :twocents:

Get out learn the area. You have a great tag and there are many bulls in the area.
The wilderness areas are great if ou are in to that kind of hunting. There are plenty of bukks taht hang out not far from roads, but you have the general tag holders pushing them around now a days.

If you are looking for a true trophy, I would talk to Norsepeak, he lives and breaths in that area and knows where to find bulls. If a guide is not in the budget, then start getting over there and learning the roads and trail system. The 19 rd is the main rod that travels through the area there are many off spur roads that will take you from the low river bottom to the Pacific Crest Trail.

Good luck with your tag  :hello:

And for first time tag holders in the area, I highly recomend Norsepeak and Chinook Pass Outfitters  to get you the bull of a life time

Welcome to the site  I don't know that area and only know a few guys that hunt it. I have seen some good bulls come out of that unit. Hunt hard and get back in there and you should do o.k.

You have to get up there and put some boots on the ground, Drive the roads and you will find areas that hold the elk. This is a rare tag and if I were you I would put all the effort I could into making this a dream hunt.
I kill elk and eat elk, when I'm not, I'm thinking about killing elk and eating elk.

It doesn't matter what you think...
