cleaning fishing gear in the dishwasher?

ive neglected my tackle boxes, and because i havent been able to get out on the salt till now, my gear has sat for about a year... after last years sekiu trip, i pretty much just put the gear away wet and alot of my spoons/plugs/flashers still have smelly jelly on them, hooks rusted, and tarnished....

 and i since im going out this weekend, i gotta clean my gear.

YUP ... Wing bobbers ....wrap them in cheese cloth and put in the silverware rack ///

Toss those hooks off the bat. I have washed flashers, quick fish, coyote spoons, divers and even hoochies. I just washed a bunch of spin n glows. You gotta put them in a mesh bag. It works really well. Dont put the spin n glows with the mylar wings in the dishwasher! It ruins the wings. All others are safe though. On top of all the cleaning of the gear at home, we also have a toothbrush on the boat and we will scrub out gear with lemon joy before putting it out and putting it back in the box. We also wear latex gloves. Does it all help?!?! I think so

If the hooks are rusted, replace them.  That is important.  After that, why would you think you need to wash any of your tackle?  If you put smelly jelly on your lures to attract fish, why would you want to wash it off??  I have never heard of anyone washing there tackle.  Rinsing off the salt, yes...but not the dishwasher.  Maybe thats just me.

yeah, if its rusty it got canned. if paint is missing, it got tossed. all leaders snipped, all split-rings and snap swivels replaced, ran everything through the dish washer and it worked great.

 for those of you who arent as particular about your gear, try it sometime, clean gear with no gunk or old funky smells produces like new gear every time its used. salmon can detect smells as fine one part per 80 billion. cigarette smoke, old bait, last nights dinner, even the soap you use in the shower can be detected by a fish if its on your hands and you touch your gear. i even go as far as changing out leaders after a fish is caught beause because of the stress pharamones salmon let out when fighting on a line.  they make a sportsmans soap that is supposed to remove all smells... forgot what its called, ive used it before and it seemed to work

oh yeah oxyclean works great on getting rust stains off of plugs and giving your uv lures thier origional shine back.

I've never done it but I don't see why you couldn't

I have never done it myself, but I have heard of people ruining a bunch of plugs by doing it. I just wash my gear in the sink with lemon joy and light scrub brush. I do my salt water gear tackle box the same.
