Turkey Box Call
« on: July 20, 2011, 10:20:52 PM »
Here's my first Turkey call I made a coupla years back. It's from a kit but. I hadda lot of fun making it. I learned plenty and know what I'd do differently next time. I also would like to make one from a solid chunk of cherry or other good tone wood as opposed to pre-cut pieces. Amazingly, it sounds good and I've actually had a discussion with a gobbler using it.

Hey thanks. I am currently working on a pair of wing-bone calls. They're my first of that kind as well. I wish I had documented (taken pictures of) the process from the start - dressing my bird - to finish. I will post up what I've got at some point tho'. Aw hell. Here's one:

Heartsblood....nice job in documentation and manufacturing. I've made re-curve bows, fishing nets and tied my own flys...I know how good it feels to hunt/fish with things that you made. Hopefully we can give that call a try next year!

Very cool! Ya don't take all those beards into the field witcha do ya?  :chuckle:

I haven't even finished one yet so I couldn't even imagine selling 'em. These two already have homes and I've just not taken enough birds to make any more. It really makes a guy appreciate killing a tom and realizing that the harvesting of said gobbler is not always gonna happen, that's fer sure. I do have the wingbones from my superjake I shot the season before last. We'll hafta see if these calls turn out well...
Thanks for the props!

Did you make (any of) yours and if so what did yo u use to bind them? What is the black material at the joints? I'm planning to use either real or fake sinew. Oh yeah, plus some sort of epoxy.

Hey thanks! I'd love to make my own bow. I've looked into a coupla makers in this area who teach it periodically but....so little time, so much to do.

Yeah it would really be something to be able to call in a bird using a call that I made from a bird I have taken. Bring things full circle so to speak. That's a dream of mine anyweys. Another goal I have is to be able to call birds in for the two different mentors who have called birds in for me. That, would be fantastic!

I'd be stoked to get out and hunt with you too next spring or sooner if you're in country. That picture of the bird you took in the snow during deer season is imbedded in my mind - what a great image!

Wing Bone calls - the final product
« Reply #8 on: August 23, 2011, 07:31:12 AM »
Finally got my wing bone calls completed:

I'm very happy with how they turned out, both asthetically and sonically. Not tryin' ta brag (well... okay a little...  :chuckle: ), but for my first pair, I can't believe how well this project ended up.
