Montana units 690 and 700
« on: April 15, 2011, 08:01:49 PM »
I drew a montana deer tag and have been already starting my homework and was thinking about the areas south of Chinook and around the CMR refugee.  Just wondering if anyone has any pointers or advice to someone new to the area.  I am planning a scouting trip for september then back to hunt in November.  Any little advice would help tremedously.  Thanks and happy hunting to all

First, it's a huge area.  Enormous.  There is a ton of public land.  Deer densities aren't tremendously high.  Expect to do a LOT of glassing.  You could find yourself a long way from any amenities, including gas so plan well.  Rain is a killer because of the gumbo.  Take chains, but realize if it rains you might not be driving anywhere until it dries out.

Curious because you mention HD700 also.  Are you planning on hunting both sides?  The CMR has its own regs on mule deer hunting and closes earlier than the regular general season.

Be prepared for tremendous changes in weather.  It can go from 70 and sunny to below zero and snowing in the blink of an eye.

Take lots of pictures.

The Missouri Breaks are phenomenal.  Be prepared to do a lot of hiking and glassing, and glass hard.  There is so much cover it'll make your head spin.

I believe the CMR in the 600 units (North side of res.) close prior to the state deadline, the CMR in the 700 stays open. I did not put in this year. The area I hunt is currently suffering from an extreme winter kill, and it is following on the heels of a moderate winter kill from the year prior. My understanding is the further west or south of the NE corner of the state will be proportionately better. I will concur, lots of public land and 2nd the gumbo. Otherwise it is a fun hunt.

We are looking at going to the CMR this year.  We are looking at two camp ground, Devils creek and Crooked creek. does anyone have any advice for these two areas.  We have hunted the CMR in years past but have not been to eather of these places.  We are planing on taking the boat because of the water levels this your it should be no problem.  Our mane reason for taking the boat is to be Abel to get to the UL bend. Has anyone been there and can tell me how the hunting is there?  is it worth it, I think its worth it to be able to get to the UL bend
