You file them off so it doesn't hurt as much when the bear takes it away and shoves it up you butt.
In case of a bear attack, your chances are at least 10 times better with bear spray vs ANY pistol. But you are probably more likely to be struck by lightning that be attacked by a bear. Either way, don't be scared.
I carry Glock 21 .45 with 2 extra mags. because you never know?!?!?!
