no high hunt topics?
« on: August 12, 2011, 08:33:33 PM »
the high hunt is getting close. i have been up a couple times into the area i plan on hunting. west of the PCT in unit 460 and have seen 3 nice bucks. two 3x3's and what looked like a 4x5.
i found them in a deep canyon while bear hunting, lots of food and water. no snow at all...but there was pockets of snow in the surrounding hills.

for you guys who have experience in the high country, do you think these deer will stay put? or move higher? im not sure of the elavtion they were at...but i would guess around 4000ft

I'm thinking of hunting it if I can get the time. Hunted it once before with bow but didnt see much. Will probably hunt alpine unit with rifle if I do it but not expecting much

As of this moment in time...the plan is to take my father-in-law and hopefully my brother or brother-in-law into the pasayten. never overnight hunted the pasayten. father in law is bringing his muzzleloader I am bringing the rifle, Plan on spending the first couple days of the high hunt in there see what we can stir up. All the long time hunters will gripe about all the new people taking over their "spot" So apologies in advance were coming to join someone, I am sure. Last year saw 30 plus rigs at one trailhead and a good 15-20 at another. just a camping trip more then anything.

yea the trail head i hunted last year was so packed with trucks, i had to park 1/2 mile down the road  :chuckle:
needless to say i didnt see any deer on my short day hunt. but all the reports i got had the same results.

this year though, i actually have a solid plan. a place to go, and that i know for a fact has animals because i spend alot of time in that area fishing. best thing is over the last 5 or 6 years i have never seen a single hunter and barely any hikers. looked at the map this year and seen it was within the high hunt boundry's

So, I was going to try the high hunt this year and was just looking for some direction.  Not your honey hole, just a place to start.  A place where I can see no people for a week and have multiple opportunities at 30" bucks.

Alright, got that out of the way...whew.  I'm surprised there haven't been a couple of more of those already.  Someone had to do it.

Good luck on the high hunt - I'm a bowhunter and may hunt up high the early part of September - at least until elk starts - but always like seeing the guys with rifles get results.  Usually only a few guys have success but it looks like they earn it.  The rest just bitch they didn't see any deer and the wilderness keeps getting more crowded.

I will be 8 days out of shoulder surgery this year........riding the pine.

yup, i would spend that time in the high country anyway. being able to bring my rifle along with me just adds to the experience. if i actually seen a buck let alone a legal buck i would be happy. to get a shot or even take a buck would be amazing. but it certainly would not take away from the hunt if i didnt see an animal.

  I've seen some of your other posts and believe it.  Good luck on your hunt and sorry to hear about your shoulder high country.  Get better soon so you can go get a big one.

I probably should qualify that "everyone else just bitches about..."  Not true - there are some guys that really get after it and I'm certainly not talking about you.  But there will still be the guys that do cry about stuff.

Alright, done eating breakfast and leaving for a bear hunt.  It's almost 2am...

Q. Will the bucks stay where they are now until Sept. 15th?
YEP; they will.  Sounds like they might be blacktail; blacky or muley they will be in the same place on the opener.
