Skagit Scouting Report
« on: August 13, 2011, 11:21:37 AM »

Hello fellow forum members!

First of all thanks to Bowhunter and Fishncliff for some tips on where to fish the Skagit.  I would have loved to post some pictures but alas... no luck.   :bash:

God willing I will land my first steelhead or salmon before I pass over into eternity.  I did see some fish caught near the hole I was fishing- everyone was taken by guys plunking sand shrimp with a spin and glow above the shrimp.  One guy got 4 Humpy's and another guy landed 1 Pink and 1 Wild Steelhead!  That was awesome to see.  Anyhow, I tried everything in my arsenal: pink jig with a pink hootchie above it, pink spinners, Blue Fox Vibrax spinner in orange and finally a plunking rig that I cobbled together with the help of the guy who caught the metalhead.  I think my sinker wasn't heavy enough (only 2oz) and the river was running pretty darn fast so my plunking rig was getting all tangled up.

Just wanted to share the info I gathered.  There are pinks in the river but the other anglers were saying it is going to be about another week or so before it gets real thick (with fish and people I guess!).   ;)

Also, the river level has been dropping according to the locals.

Good luck to all,

Jg

I have not made it to the river yet, but I have caught many humpies on dick nite spoons. And not always something that has red or pink on them! You change colors to what they are biting. Two years ago the fish started biting silver/green with black speckles :bash: Im not an expert by no means, but I was shown this by locals who fish the river all the time. Dick nites are cheaper than alot of other lures. Spoon size only needs to be size 2 or 3, you dont need the big dick night size. Holiday sports in Burlington has a lot of gear and info. good luck!
I will keep my guns, money and freedom. You can keep the change!

No worries yet.  It's only going to get better over the new few weeks.
