How to beat the heat??

I'm concerned about this here heat wave that we're facing. I went out yesterday checking cameras from 0900-1300 and it damned near killed me!! I'm hoping that things will still be good at first light and that midday sitting by a wallow will be productive. The long distance forecast is calling for highs in the mid-70's for the first few days of the hunt...my fingers are crossed. Anybody have any thoughts on the HEAT?

Not only is it calling for falling temps. its calling for a snap in temp (E side). forcast shows wed-thur daytime highs dropping 10+ degrees. Park next to some water until then. Should get interesting when the temp dropps. Dont blow them out in the nasty heat.  If its too warm just go ahead and give me your tag.

Heat!!!  Shoot you don't know what heat is.  I can't wait to leave Alabama.  Two more weeks.  It was 100 degrees yesterday,  will be today and for the next two days.  Oh also because of the humidity the heat index (opposite of wind chill) means its actually 120

Just did a search on cle elum weather.  It shows a few days that look pretty cool actually high 68 for one day, low 42 for another.  Add 2000-2500ft in elevation (camp elevation roughly.) and temps will likely drop to freezing at night. Just how I like it.  Heat doesn't really scare me much as long as temps don't go above 85-90.  But I am one of those guys who doesn't care too terribly much if he bags an elk or not.  I just like being up there, of course I do everything I can to be successful. 

I remember hearing the old rule of thumb for temperature drop related to elevation change is, subtract 3.5 degrees per 1000 feet of elevation gained. so that would mean 7-8.75 degrees cooler than cle elum.  So 35-33.25 degree morning.  Sounds nice!

Agree, if possible hunt higher up.  The evenings and early mornings are still a bit cool.  Maybe even cool an animal in some snow that is still on the ground or in a creek.  Then haul it out in the dark.

I checked the 10 day forcast last night and was very relieved to see the temp dropping right at season start. I hunt at Snoqualmie pass for deer and it was 76 yesterday.  I hate hunting in that kind of heat. Opening day and couple of days after are in the fifties. Perfect.  Hope everyone has a great season. Simply watch when and where the shade is and how it moves.  The elk will mimic that movement by only a few minutes difference.  That's a strategy that I use, anyway.  That, and hunt close to water where the last of that shade either runs out or stays throughout the day.  Google Earth's sun chasing time-slider feature is priceless for this info if you want to get a jump on info collecting.  This happens May through November.

what I use for hunting warmer weather, Under armour heat gear and scent lock savanah ext camo. It is a little chilly in the morning, but as it warms up it keeps you cool.

i think it 118 here today... (middle east) hopefully get home in a few days.. hell if its in the seventies when i get to the woods that will feel cool after these last couple months..

Skip the coffee and go easy on the beer the night before. Proper hydration starts days before the event.
