It looks more like a hole than a tag to me. If its a hole, it's way to large to be from a rifle. Maybe a shotgun slug. :dunno:

Even animals now are putting those things in their ears....gauging I think is what they call it....crazy world we live in.

Given the size of the hole.  It it was a projectile that did this.  I would have to say that came from a muzzleloader slug.  Too big for most modern rifle rounds.

Could have been a rifle hole as the tissue around it could have been damaged and been lost as well.  Does anyone know if the state actually uses ear tags on deer?
