So i was looking at the forecast and its calling for 86 - 90 degrees  for most of eastern wa.  This is my first year doing archery elk and i'm wondering is it normally this damn hot?

I'm concerned there wont be anything moving  ,  maybe it's just the newb in me but I'm nervous and anticipating a complete bust ...

Any thoughts???

Thanks,

Nah things will be okay.  You'll just have to change tactics a little bit.  If its that hot they wont be doing as much vocal rut activity because of the heat and they wont stay out feeding as much and do more of it at night when its cool.  But...  They wont be as mobile and wont move as much meaning if you find elk somewhere chances are they are gonna stay there.  Also since they wont be talking as much nor as mobile people wont see as many animals as they are used to so they'll give up quicker meaning if you are persistant you'll have less compitition.

If you find those deep north facing slopes that are nice and cool and a water source nearby it will be a goldmine.

I only get to hunt elk 7 days a year and this year only 5 so I like to stay super positive because once that week is up elk season is another 51 weeks away.  Basically an eternity for me.  They way I figure it (and when I say I figured it out I really mean I just listened to elknut's CD's and read his book)  its not like if its a full moon or its hot the elk evaporate into thin air.  They have to go somewhere.   :dunno:

Sounds like a normal year to me.  I was doing some last minute changes to my stand yesterday morning and had a bull making some noise for the better part of an hour while I was there.  No full bugles but a few grunts and short bugles.

just about the time you give up......it happens....never give up, positive thoughts produce positive results.

Being able to take advantage of the opportunities you get are what seperates successful hunters from unsuccessful hunters. Believe me, total focus is required while in a stand...look, listen, and smell............

Very true.  My dad tagged out the second to last day of the season mid-day a few years back.  We set up in some thick timber around 1pm and plan to sit till dark, no calling.  A spike walked by me at around 5, no shot.  It continued on and my dad got a shot!  Just goes to show.  Thinking of taking a nap? Sleeping in? Calling it a day early?  Think again.  The more time in the woods the better shot you have.
