roads still closed in 340?
« on: August 31, 2011, 09:56:32 PM »
Just wondering if anyone has been in unit 340 lately and if the roads are still closed? If so are they going to open them up before rifle elk season or not?

The best advice is that you need to look at the USFS website for the Cle Elum Ranger District. It will show you where all the roads are closed as the list is many and will be detailed with all of the closure points. All I can say is that getting into the Manastash will be extremely difficult unless you are thinking about coming in on all the motorcycle/horse trails that weave through the unit or a mountain bike. According to the head USFS Ranger for the Cle Elum District, the roads will be closed until the spring of 2012. I'm interested to see how many guys will still head over not knowing that the roads are still closed.

The weekend warriors will be cruising up the Taneum creek to the 3330, get to the junction and see the barriers.  Man that's gonna throw them for a loop.

I was up Taneum last weekend.  Pretty darn limited.  We had to go thru Joe Watt Canyon to get up in there.  Rough ass road, I won't be taking my camper up that one.

I blew a baseball size hole thru the top of my tranny up Taneum last year, my season was over the first day of rifle last year.  Switched back to archery for good, figured rifle season is bad luck for me.  haven't killed an elk in washington state yet.
This could be the year with this Bull Tag.

Road No. 3100 Manastash is closed from the Sno-Park to Barber Springs Road, at Buck Meadows (you cannot cross Manastash Creek on the 3100), and from the junction with 3120 to the end at Quartz Mountain.
Road No. 3330 Gnat Flat will remain closed at the junction with to Goosebery Flat.
Road No. 3350 Peoh Point is closed from mile post 1.6 to the junction with Road No. 3350-119
Road 3120 is closed at a point between the junction with 3120 109 and 3100 near the Hoyt Mine Trail crossing
3111 115 Walter Springs will remain closed.
Access to the area south of Taneum Creek and north of Manastash Creek is via the LT Murray State Wildlife Area using Joe Watt Canyon and connecting roads

Read up..........
http://discoverpass.wa.gov/

Quoted directly from the exemptions portion of that link.

Hunting and fishing on WDFW-managed lands. The Discover Pass is not required for holders of certain hunting and fishing licenses on WDFW recreation lands and water-access sites. For those individuals, a "WDFW vehicle access pass" will be required for vehicle access to WDFW lands and boat launches. WDFW will honor WDFW vehicle use permits that were purchased prior to July 1, 2011, on WDFW lands through March 31, 2012.

Those license holders will need a Discover Pass to access DNR-managed lands that are developed or designated as recreation areas, sites, trailheads and parking areas. Signs will be posted in these areas. License holders will not need a Discover Pass to access small blocks of undesignated DNR-managed lands.

For vehicle access to lands managed by State Parks, all hunters or fishers will need to purchase the Discover Pass. As a reminder, hunting is not allowed on State Parks lands.

Note: The vehicle access pass is valid for the license's year (April 1 through March 31) and is issued free of charge with an individual's initial purchase of a big-game or small-game hunting license, western Washington pheasant permit, trapping license, Watchable Wildlife decal, or saltwater, freshwater or combination recreational fishing license.

Your WDFW vehicle pass should be all that you need in the LT Murray. That's my thought anyway, I wouldn't guarantee you won't get ticket if you don't have the Discover pass.

I read this same thing,
So what about National Forest? Is that considered WDFW land?

No, National Forest is owned by the federal government. WDFW is owned by the state of Washington. Totally different.

So the Discover my Wallet Pass is needed then?

I was up there last weekend and the 3330 was wide open all kinds of cars trucks trailers wall tents you name it it was up there the baricade at the bottom had been removed. I rode in from the top and there was no indication of that road being closed or of even needing to be closed for that matter from the top to bottom.  not sure if they will close it back off but if they due it is assanine as there is a little tiny wash across the road that is nowhere near in need of attention a landscape rake and the 6 inches of gravel pushed out to the shoulder worked back into the road would have any issue taken care of in about 20 minutes worth of work.  the Forest Service needs to quit playing the political no money game to get more and just open it up they would have a drastic drop in the number of people pissed off at the entire organization.  they sure seem to still be able to pay enough for the fancy rigs and the staffing to go with it and if there are no campgrounds to maintain and roads to keep open after closing them all wht the heck are they doing all day.  sorry about the soap box but it rubs me the wrong way a legitimate washout is one thing but the stuff on that road is bull pucky.  Didn't see any elk, one white tail doe and a handfull of grouse but it was still plenty hot.

There's a Discovery Pass Required sign up at Tamarack Springs.  Someone knocked it down, so not sure which direction the sign was pointing towards.

It must be for the area to the east, since that would be state land. To the west is National Forest.

I was completely caught off gaurd with the white tail myself but there was no doubt she was clearly a whitetail.  I hunt muleys all the time and so I know what i was looking at she was down by barber springs towards the bottom before we headed up walter springs on the other side. didn't have my camera with me or i would have snapped a picture she stood and looked at us for about 2 minutes at about 20 yrdsfrom the truck
