public land question
« on: September 07, 2011, 10:47:41 PM »
Just wondering if anyone can tell me is there any public land up around the lower part of nahahum canyon? Last year i seen a lot trucks parked on the right hand side of the road leading up the canyon, but i have looked on maps and cant find any info.

use the gohunt program at wdfw.  It'll show you all the public land.

I tried using that go-hunt program, I got lots of pretty colors, but no real ascertainable info from it.

Ive been looking for population information based on the GMU. But again I cant find it.

They don't have deer/elk population numbers by the GMU (that I know of). But what you can look at are the Harvest Reports, which are available on the WDFW website. The harvest information by GMU will give you an idea of which units have the most animals.

If you zoom in, way in, you can get a good idea of where the public land is.  You just have to flip to the legend on the left side and it tells you what all the colors mean.  You can toggle between topo and arial views and if you pick the DNR roads option, you get a lot more roads showing up.  Play with it a bit, it'll help.

Buy a Garmin GPS and get this: http://www.huntinggpsmaps.com/

It is so much easier than using GoHunt, and so much more practical.

just a warning on WDFW gohunt, the boundry lines between public and private are not always 100% accurate. Iwould reccommend checking the tax parcel also.

and the tax parcel maps arent always accurate either Grays Harbors maps have some issues...

The absolute worst interactive map ever devised. Its a nice thought, but who actually programmed the thing? Kindergarteners with crayons????? Whoever comes up with a hunting map that combines up to date tax parcel info, google earth (with actual up to date imagery), hiking trails and FS Roads showing area closures along with WA. GMU info will make a bundle.

That's the truth. I would be willing to pay for a program that actually works. GoHunt sucks.

I like the Go Hunt map. It works really well for me. You might just need to spend more time with it and learn how to use it.

Well I'm glad someone is getting some use out of it. It's good to know the the R&D money used from our hunting dollars wasn't completely wasted.

I know my way around that map VERY well. Still not happy with it. Too much to go into why, but I'm glad it's working for some peoples needs.

Im not sure how much it will help me, but the topo maps look pretty legit and it has help me (someone unfamiliar with the area) find some promising public land. Granted it doesn't kill the animal for me but hopefully with a few more trips it will lead me to them.

:yeah:

Pretty easy to use this and bring up Google Earth using Basecamp.
I couldn't imaging trying to find public land spots without it. It's proven itself very useful in gaining access on private land also in recent weeks. Do it. You'll be glad you did
