Best way to bait and call Cougar.
« on: September 18, 2011, 08:55:23 AM »
Would really like to knock one down this year. Well I mean one that I get to keep and tan. ;) So what works for calling them in? How about baiting? Is it legal to stake a goat or chickens to the ground in the woods for live bait?

As far as I know a goat is legal.  Other cougar calls (the mating calls) are supposed to be the most effective for getting a tom.  Cow elk calls and deer fawn calls are good for any cougar.  Another thing that works for some is to find a fresh kill and then use a coyote call, they will come to chase off the coyote.

It's legal to bait lions, but I believe you'd be waisting your time with a live goat or live anything.  I don't think it would be worth your trouble or very effective.  As far as calls I would contact Rainshadow1, he has cutting edge lion sounds that do work.

I don't cougar hunt bit I have always been told to talk to rainshadow1 for sounds and that the best cougar bait is their own kill.

I used a foxpro caller with one of rainshadow1's calls and a fawn in distress call to call in and take a large male.  Also used a little decoy that wiggles and the cat was focused on that as he came in.  The story was posted here in Feb '10    The most thrilling hunt I have ever been on.  Can't wait for this season to get here.
