Dog training seasons?
« on: September 18, 2011, 09:37:22 AM »
What are the season's and rules for training dogs in WA state?  Or, do you know where you can find it in the regs.  I can't seem to find in anywhere.  My dad just got his brittany back from training and he would like to buy some birds for put and take to train with.  Can you do that on public land like Scatter Creek, or do you need to be on private land.  Is there a season in WA state to do this, or can you do it all year round as long as you have a receipt and can prove you put the birds down.   Thanks in advance

BIRD DOG TRAINING SEASON

Wild upland game birds may be pursued during the dog-training season, but may not be killed except during established hunting seasons. A small game license is required to train dogs on wild game birds. A Western Washington Pheasant Permit is required to train dogs on pheasants in Western Washington. Captive raised game birds may be released and killed during dog training if proof of lawful acquisition (invoices) are in possession and the birds are appropriately marked (WAC 232-12-271 and 232-12-044).

OPEN AREA: Statewide.

SEASON DATES: Aug. 1, 2009 - Mar. 31, 2010; Aug. 1, 2010 - Mar. 31, 2011; Aug. 1, 2011 - Mar. 31, 2012.

Only youth and seniors may train dogs during their respective seasons on designated Western Washington pheasant release sites.

Bird dog training may be conducted year round on areas posted for bird dog training on portions of: Region One - Espanola (T24N, R40E, E 1/2 of section 16); Region Three - South L. T. Murray Wildlife Area; Region Four - Skagit Wildlife Area, Lake Terrell Wildlife Area, and Snoqualmie Wildlife Area; Region Five - Shillapoo/Vancouver Lake Wildlife Area; Region Six - Scatter Creek Wildlife Area, Fort Lewis Military Base.

You can pay by the day at private grounds such as Carlson's K-9 Country Club and Peppers Retriever Grounds. I wouldn't advise trying to train when hunting is open at places like Scatter Creek and Cherry Valley. Another good thing to do is find a farmer with a field in Hay and ask him if you can go run your dogs. Most of the time they are fine with it. Richard Matzke near Rainier, Pat Murphy in Monroe and Jim Cochran in Fall City all do "day training" and usually charge a minimal fee to help give you suggestions/homework on training and can sell you birds. Usually about $50 per training session + birds is typical for pointing dogs.
"Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows not victory nor defeat."
Theodore Roosevelt 1899
