« on: June 27, 2008, 04:05:17 PM »
So I have been looking at some of these landowner tags and was wondering if anyone has any experiance with them.  Are you allowed to hunt on the landowners property if you buy one?  I have no experiance with these so anything you got Im all ears  :hello:

My dad bought a colorado deer voucher 4 years ago. He bought it off an outfitter who had a client cancellation. There's been a problem with the intent of the program in that the tags were for the landowner to be able to sell them to recoup losses from damage to their property. Problem is tag voucher brokers started selling the tags for the landowners and of course made a profit, this was not the intent of the program. The tag my dad bought was good for the whole unit, which I thought they all were.

But I recently saw a tag for sale that stipulated ranch only. So maybe now there are both ranch only and unit wide like in New Mexico. If you buy tag from the landowner they cannot legally keep you off their property. I did not know this with my dad's hunt which I did the footwork and paperwork on. The landowner was trying to charge an additional trespass fee which I learned from Garth Carter (huntin fool) is a no-no under the rules of the program, but occurs.

Make sure the unit that the voucher is good for has plenty of public access/land to hunt. Alot of colorado's public land is landlocked by private. Some of the state land is not public accessible for hunting, which kind of blew me away. If it is leased for livestock you can't hunt it.

I had the same outfitter/tag broker call me last year trying to sell me tags for a unit I knew nothing about. After a little research I found out the unit is mostly private and the public is landlocked. It only took 2 points to draw and he was charging $450 more than what a guy could readily buy a tag for from the list of landowners in the unit. You can get the list from the Colorado DWR. Be careful of deals to good to be true. A little research goes along way. When you take your voucher to be redeemed you pay the non-resident fee for the tag in addition to the cost of the voucher. Vouchers are negotiable. If you have anything to barter give it a shot. That's about all I know, good luck!

Thanks for the info.  The unit Im looking at only takes 2 points to draw so hopefully i can find a tag that won't cost an arm and a leg and if it gets me some private land access thats even better.
