Need ideas for 270 wsm handloads
« on: September 25, 2011, 10:17:45 PM »
So now that I actually have my 270 wsm rifle I worked up a few handloads with Reloader 17.  I used 62 grains of reloader 17 with 130 barnes TSX's.  The alliant website this amount of powder and bullet weight would get me around 3250 fps, I chrono'd it and got 3400 fps lol.  I would get 2 shots touching or real close and then have a flyer that would shoot anywhere from 1.5 to 2 inches to the right or left.  I am shooting out of a lead sled so I am confident I wasn't jerking the rifle.  I then loaded up some 130 barnes and nosler ballistic tips with 63 grains of reloader 19 which according to the nosler book is about middle of road for that powder in this caliber.  The average FPS for this load was 3150, the barnes still wouldn't group worth a darn.  The ballistic tips were better but I know this custom built rifle could do a lot better.  Anyone have any sweet handloads in the 270 wsm that work well for them?  I would appreciate some insight, thanks!

I haven't loaded for the 270 WSM so I'm not much help. But one thing I know is if you're getting 3400 fps when the books say it should only be 3250, you're most likely way over pressure. I'd be real careful with that load. You might try dropping down a few grains and try to match the book velocity a little closer. Not sure why you're getting the flyers. Sometimes it can be a scope or scope mounting issue, or a bedding problem with the rifle. But if it's not that then it's hard to say. In my Browning A bolt in 270 Win I've gotten the best groups with Ballistic Tips. If they won't shoot in your rifle then I don't know what to say. You could try different seating depths and see if that makes a difference.

Yeah your cooking them out. I would back off, most my loads that shoot well in my 270 wsm's are around 3000-3100fps. Which are just a little better then mid level in my books

???  I do a little over 3400 in a 270 WSM and a 130gr Accubond, using RL-22 and thats a load out of the Nosler manual #6. If your shooting 3000-3100 you might as well be shooting a standard .270 Win . I could probably get more if I worked it up untill pressure sighns or a slightly stiff bolt lift then backed it down a little.

My bother shot a mule deer with the load above head on at 40ft, found the bullet perfectly mushroomed in the left rear thigh . Still retained 70 percent of it's weight. Have to love those Accubonds. :chuckle:

All I can say is use a 140 gr bullet like hornaday or a bonded bullet .... 140 gr seems to be an awesome bullet for this cal.  :twocents:

I'm shooting 63.5gr of RL17, with 140gr accubonds out of a model 700 @ 3330fps.
It will shoot better than I am capable.                                  Also out of a lead sled.

Whats your overall cartrige length on that?  Right now mines at 2.83 I believe but I've noticed on other sites a lot of people have theirs at 2.85, maybe I have my bullets seated to far off the lands.  I'll have to do some tinkering.

I load 67.5grs. of Acccurate Arms Mag Pro with a Nosler 140gr. Accubond bullet. Using Winchester cases and large magnum primers. 1/4"group in my rifle at 100yds. Has killed alot of mule deer.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

A hot load (and 3400 out of a 270 WSM is HOT) can possibly cause the barrel to vibrate enough that it touches the stock when it's already warm, and pushing another hot load down the barrel.  That has been known to cause flyers in more than one rifle I've met.

NOT sure where you are getting your info but on a 140 gr bullet I would seat it at 2.785 C.O.L THIS WILL STILL WORK FOR A 130 gr BULLET TOO ! :twocents:

If I were you I would seat as long as the mag allows unless it kisses the lands sooner. Then go look at biggerhammers post on his 450 it will show a ladder test. Load your favorite powder in 1/2 grain increments and always hold the same spot. Plot each hit. You will find that some loads cluster and then the next will jump or fall. These are showing the barrels harmonics. Send them all through a chronograph. When you quit gaining speed for the powder addition....you are at your max, or when you are beating the book speeds.

When you get a few loads that are very close, load a few groups for each and go from there....it sounds long and drawn out, but hoping to hit the lucky recipe could take forever.

I'll play with the seating a little bit, we seated our 130s just off the lands (used the "cover the bullet in black ink and seat until you no longer see the lands markings" method)  I didn't try to load the rounds that hot, I went off the Alliant website load data, they said 62 grains of RL 17 would be around 3250, thats what I used and it was way to hot, suprised me too, I do not plan on loading them that hot anymore.  Basically what I was looking for is people who have developed a 270 wsm load that they have had success with that I could replicate or tailor to work in my rilfe, but again I appreciate the info guys.

man someone is loading some hot loads O.K Most guys who shoot reloader anything are looking for high velocities and I personally do not run that way ... I care more about putting bullets in the same hole ... which loading hot does not usually do that ... AS FAR AS THE TOPIC HERE IS WHAT I would be doing with REloader 19 IF I used it ...but I do not but I know enough to give some advice to ya !!!  270 WSM Loaded with a 130 gr bullet ( RL-19 61.5 grs MAX) C.O.L 2.785 TRY THAT & Let me know how ya do ! :yeah: AND If I was loading this 270 WSM for myself I would do this .... 140 GR HORNADAY SPBT Loaded with  H4831 @ 63.3 grs  and C.O.L 2.785 Bet THATS A SHOOTER LOAD and your still over 3000 fps more like 3100 fps and not so hot !!!! :twocents: just a solid 30 yrs of loading talking ...thats all  :chuckle: :twocents:

Doesn't Nosler suggest .050 to .100 off the the rifling. Also you said you were shooting a custom rifle so standard book col measurements may not apply.
