I need a new hunting rifle! Any ideas?
« on: September 25, 2011, 10:22:07 PM »
Alright so i have had my eye on the R700. I have had my eye on the Ruger Hawkeye mark ii 300 mag win. I like the mark ii just because it is hefty and just a beefy rifle. But, the R700 shoots the same caliber, its lighter and apparently more accurate. I have also heard some good things about a 7mm. Any opinions?  :dunno:

if i had my choice, plus when i get home from deployment I'm planning on picking up a Browning x-bolt Composite Stalker in 300 win mag myself, i have read nothing but good reviews on them plus the triple safety dont seem to bad and reasonably priced too and purdy darn accurate. Although i had just sold my remington M700 before i had left and wanted something new.

Depends on where you hunt and how you hunt. I mostly hunt the west side for Blacktails, and Elk, so I prefer a light, short rifle that is easy to handle and quick to throw up. I have been hunting with a Win. mod. 70 in 7mm. mag. for years, but I often pack my Ruger M77 Mountain rifle in 30.06 for blacktails. I am currently looking to buy a 300 wsm, either in a Browning A bolt Micro Hunter, or a Rem. Model Seven CDL. My 7mag. is a little heavy and long, and I don't care for Rugers a whole lot, that is why I'm looking to change to one all around rifle.

I like the hawkeye better over the 700's.

What game are you hunting, what kind of terrain are you hunting?  How do you like to hunt?  Hard to know what to suggest without this information.

I have a Browning A-bolt .270 in stainless/synthetic, it's a real beauty, and shoots straight as an arrow, not too heavy, not too light (doesn't have much recoil), I love it, they are a little more expensive than the hawkeyes, ok, they run about 800 for just the rifle, but well worth it if you ask me. I've heard nothing but good things about the remington 700's also.

Never seen or shot a Weatherby M5 Accumark I didnt like or didn't shoot well. Monte Carlo stock is one of my fav for bench shooting comfort. 300 weatherby, 300 WSM, 0r 30-378 weatherby.

Could not agree more. I also have that gun in .270. I have never been more confident in a gun!!!

Of the two you mentioned I would choose the Remington.  either caliber will be fine. neither does anything the other won't do.

I have Rugers, Remingtons and Brownings, like them all and they are all plenty accurate for the hunting I do.  Would not be afraid to take a 400+ yard shot with any of them, and have succesfully.  I will say I really like my Browning 325wsm in stainless stalker for packing.
I didn't say it was your fault, I said I was blaming you.
If I ageed with you, then we'd both be wrong.

i have a ruger hawkeye and a couple 700s both are great rifles but i like some features over others of both.

for the ruger i love the positive feed but dont quite like the wobble of the mauser style bolt although you get used to it

the 700 i like the straight forward and back action of the bolt and the reputation of the 700 line

cant go wrong with either

Remington tends to be lighter and easy to get hot rod parts for. River is a good bang for the buck, but if you ever want to customize it, not many smiths work them. I would choose a REM of the two, and I own both.

Hands down of the two you mentioned, REMINGTON! Here in Wenatchee the local Bi-Mart is selling stainless Rem700's in .300 win mag, 7mm Mag, 30-06, .308 win, .270 Win SPS/ADL. The synthetic stock is exactly the same as the SPS but without the hinged floor plate. For $439.00
