need help choosing a new rifle!!!
« on: September 27, 2011, 07:49:14 PM »
im stuck between two very good rifles and they both have plus's and their minus's? please help me shed some light? im stuck between the tikka t3 super lite in 270win or the new winchester extreme sporter in 270wsm? their both about the same price so that has nothing to do with it! ill list some of my thoughts and differences:
tikka:
pro's: 5.8lbs, stainless fluted barrel, detachable mag, and about 60 degree bolt, cheaper ammo
con's: cheap feeling stock and magazine, only a 22" barrel and the caliber is a lil slower

winchester:
pro's: control feed bolt, short action, factory ball & carlson aluminum framed stock, 24"  fluted barrel, 6.5lbs, and its a faster round
con's: internal magazine with floor plate, blued finish, and ammo is a lil more weights a lil more then the tikka

the tikka has a nice light backpack hunting feel that i like and its stainless for the WA weather! the winchester has the more quality feel with the wsm offering a lil better long range capable ballistics, if choose to start shooting and hunting longer ranges its got the option and edge with the longer barrel and short action and better stock!
thanks in advance for your opinions!

 Doesn't the t3 come in .270 wsm? I have a t3 in .300 wsm and love it.

finish is not an issue, both will rust if put away wrong. the detach mag is good and bad, fast to load or unload but easy to lose and tikka doesnt make the greates mag. the win has a shell issue, if you forget your shells, the 270 win is alot easier to find than a short mag, the mag is faster but how far do you want to shoot and at what. the 308 shoots pretty much the same as the 270 win and its a 1000yd gun.if your going backpacking that pound could be a blessing. i would get the 270win in tikka but just my thoughts.

I would choose a winchester in 270 win myself. But if it has to be a short mag.....so be it. Having dealt with berettas customer screwvice, I would not wish it on anyone.

I really like the 270 WSM cartridge.   You would be very well served getting a Tikka T3 in that caliber.

Both are excellent rifles.  The 22" and the 24" barrel will compound the velocity difference between the cartridges.  It will probably give you a 300-400 fps difference between the two rifles, all else being equal.  Both shoot flat, but the WSM a bit flatter and a bit more downrange energy.  My thoughts would be to handle both and see if the shorter action is better, especially prone shooting. The pound is a lot of difference between the two rifles by themselves but with a 50-60lb pack not much in the big picture.  Besides, you can make the pound up elsewhere, like by going commando!

The regular T3 is pretty light: just over 6 pounds.  The extra 200 ft/second you gain with the WSM is a nice extra edge.

Of the 2 you listed I really like the tikka. That being said the 270wsm is the better caliber. If you are planning on shooting around 300 or under go with the t3 in 270win if you want 300+yards go to the wsm

I picked up a Tika superlite .270 last year and I have been really impressed with it . It shoots great and packs very well.

It has my vote .

Again.....Tikka all the way. Much smoother action and waaaaaay more accurate. I am suprised at the cost tho. I bought my Tikka T3 Lite 300 WM 2 years ago and only paid $439.00. Bought it online, and had it shipped to my local dealer who did the FFL transfer for me for $40. I can't imagine prices going up that much in 2 years. I would check online dealers if I were you and do some more shopping. I guess I should mention that was without a scope. I don't know if they were offering a scope as well. If so, that may not be a bad price depending on the scope.
