You may be able to talk with the Fish and Game Department and have them issue you a second tag to take out the spike. If it has a disease they do not want that spreading into the healthy deer population. I had a friend who shot a spike on his property and it did not look like yours but you could tell it was sick. Come to find out it had some parasite that could have infected more deer in the area. He had fish and game come out and they confescated the deer, issued him a new tag and thanked him for contacting them. Just a thought, it may be worth it and you don't want to risk the health of other deer.
