Newbies first deer hunt
« on: September 30, 2011, 03:39:54 PM »
We are going to Idaho for opening week of deer season and there will be 6 of us going. We are going to be splitting up into pairs so we can "divide and conquer"  I will be taking my buddy who has never deer hunted before. He has been out duck hunting with me a decent number of times but never been on a deer hunt like this before. My goal is to get him his first deer and I will be wearing the guide hat until he does and he has first shot no matter what. My question to you guys is if we see a spike or little forkie or something first morning do I have him shoot it? Part of me says yes but another part says to hold out because we should be in a quality area. I am going to base more of my decision after we scout the day before but as of now I am undecided but leaning towards having him dump the first legal buck we see. Thoughts?  :dunno:

For a first deer any legal deer should be fine, can't all get trophies on our first hunt but I would also ask him what his opinion is if he wants to be successful and get meat in the freezer or possibly get skunked holdin out

I agree. I was lucky enough to shoot a little basket rack 4x4 whitey for my first deer but after that I shot my share of spikes and forkies and was/am just as proud of them. He is fine with shooting any legal deer but he is depending on me to tell him what to do so it will be my call.

He will be excited and happy with any buck he gets. I started out my hunting career with archery deer when I was a kid and was happy with a small 3 point for my first deer. Any legal buck was a trophy in my eyes then and the same is true now. I still take the first legal buck I run across.

I'd give it a day, then make a decision on what you see.

Dump the first legal buck you find that offers a good shot.  Even if it's a smallish buck, just getting one on the ground for the first time really helps with confidence.

Also, there's always the "Beginners Luck" thing too.  So his first buck may be a dandy!

Good luck!

My thoughts exactly. First buck we see will probably be the biggest buck of the trip and he will get him. I am totally ok with that too!
