Winchester Model 101

Does anyone have any advice or info on this shotgun.  I am looking at a 12 guage o/u 2 3/4" in great shape for $800.  I am new to the shotgun world.  i have always used my dads old remmington model 1100 but is now not working properly.

One of the best O/U built, I've had five over the years.  Only had a problem with one, a chipped firing pin tip while shooting shells made in Taiwan(I was shooting in a tournament there).  They have mechanical triggers so even if your shooting very light loads that wouldn't set an inertia trigger they will work in a 101.  One of my 101 I've been shooting since 1966 and has well over 100,000 shells through it and still is tight as a drum.  Non of mine were built with steel shot in mind(all pre 1968) and have pretty thin barrels.  I have quite a few shot guns but if there is money on the line out comes the 101.

Thanks for the info AWS!!  You shoot mostly trap or you take it out in the field for bird?  I plan to hunt pheasant and quail

Some of the higher end 101's are quite desireable. They are as said, very solid shotguns.

I shot International Trap on the military team in Taiwan, American Trap in Sportsmans Club leagues in WI & MN and International Skeet around the country.  I sold my American trap and skeet guns but kept the International Trap gun(30" F&F) and rechoked(SK-II&IM) and stocked it for hunting and shooting for spaniel hunt tests, the International skeet gun(101 26" Field grade with custom skeet chokes) I keep in WI for impromptu bird hunting trips so I don't have to deal with airline travel with a gun.  Dropped out of formal competition about 10yrs ago when cataracts and complication from the surgery sidelined me for a few years.

Good call on buying it!

A buddy of mine has one an it's a great gun. If you do want to take it out hunting, you can shoot the Hevi-shot Classic Doubles shot shells in them. It's a good load that's designed for the older double guns.

I'll second what AWS said about the durability.  Mine has had far too many shells through it to even keep track of, and it's still all there.  A family member shot in a trap/skeet league for many years with it, then when I got it I did the same.  Some days it felt like I just couldn't miss a bird with that gun.
