Anyone is welcome to come sight in their rifles if you dont have a place to do so. I know it is getting close to hunting season and there arent alot of "Legal" places to shoot anymore. Its a real simple range, I have a bench set up at 100 yards and a big dirt backstop. You can shoot up to 220 yards I beleive but there isnt a bench back there. Give me a call if you need to shoot or you can PM me also. My name is Charlie for those that dont know and I live up the Skookumchuck valley near Tenino and Rainier. My number is 360-264-2567.

Dang Charlie, mighty decent of you. Wish I had a neighbor like that. I've built a couple of informal ranges, but the upkeep, and dealing with the garbage from all the locals is a real pain. That, and having to replace everthing that gets stolen every few days....Upkeep would be simple if I didn't have to deal with folks that enjoy shooting stands more than targets.

Had some of my steel targets stolen, guess folks thought they would look better at their house than the range. Bolted all the targets together with lock nuts, and somebody went through and stole all the bolts! That had to be a job, let me tell you.

If I lived close, I'd contribute to your range Charlie, but just how much shootin' can you stand?  ;)

I dont have targets set up like that , just a  20 ft wide by 6-8 ft tall mound of dirt behind the sheet of plywood I set up to tack targets for sighting in with. Trust me its not open to people to just come over and shoot when they want, just figured if anyone needed to sight in rifle or 4 they could give me a call and come on over. There is a open private range by the coal mine on tono and big hannaford that gets pretty trashed, I used to sight in there but became a hastle. Its nice to have my own "simple" range I can shoot on. Its nice to be able to work up some loads and go test them out right at home! I do need to take the brushhog out and cut the grass though ;)

Charlie, next time you put a backstop up, try cardboard. The heavier stuff is better, but you will be surprised how well even the single wall stuff holds up, even in rain. It also won't tear your targets when bullets go through, you know, how the plywood will "blow-back" through targets, leaving irregular shaped holes. Makes it hard to determine through a spotting scope at longer ranges, plus targets last longer.

And the best part-Its a hell of a lot cheaper than plywood!  clean up is easier too.

i can try and get you some big 4x6' sheets of cardboard from work...i regularly get big sheets from people buy/replacing fridges and freezers that they just throw out in the dumpsters. 90% of the time they just lay then back between the buildings and dumpsters.

its not 100%, but if i see them i will grab them for you.

Sure might as well. I think I will go out and mow the range tomorrow. I need to do some shooting pretty soon myself. I've shot so many yotes with my 300 mag I need to load up some more shells.

I've put close to 1000 rounds through a 4'X4' sheet of cardboard before I had to replace it with another.

Brace them up with 2X2's (actually 1 1/2" square X 8' long NO CROSS PIECES! JUST A LEG ON EITHER SIDE!), screw with two sheetrock screws and fender washers on each board, then stick in the ground with either a couple of short pieces of 2" pipe, or square stock. The trick here is you only need about 12" pieces in the ground, it won't sway in the wind, and you can lift the targets out when your done shooting if need be, or take 'em down for replacement of the cardboard. You can reuse the screws/washers indefinatly, and if the cardboard doesn't have any creases, it will hold the target up square.

The best part, you staple your targets up on the cardboard, then its very easy to remove the staples when you want to remove your targets.

TARGET PASTERS

Use pasters on your targets to make them last longer, and use specific targets for specific ranges. You can write on the pasters, either your enitials if you are sharing the target with someone else, or date just to make it easier to "know" what your rifle does at "said" ranges under differant weather/wind/ temp-conditions.

Hope this helps, and doesn't confuse! ;)
