Back From WY,Tagged Punched!
« on: October 04, 2011, 10:08:55 AM »
Didn't know how the season would progress for me this season after having major back surgery and being fused in my lower back at the end of June. Well two months later, wearing my ridiculously priced back brace, twenty days in the Wyoming back country, lost 15lbs., passed on nine bull's with definite good shots from nine to thirty five yards and holding out for the mid three hundred class bull, close encounters of bulls of your dreams, with the desire to keep pushing on to the last day and last three hours I finally punched my tag. Not the bull I was after but after 20 days it would have to do and still happy with the whole season of constant bugling and chasing of the September ghost's! :)

Nice thing about the packing, this is the first year I took up some friends offer to pack out with horse's if needed, and it sure was a blessing, especially when your other hunting buddies left after three days. They said that the country was to rough for them, but what can I expect they were from Cali. and not used to the terrain, but figured they could keep up with a guy that just got his broken backed fused, go figure! :dunno:

Congrats!  Sounds like an awesome trip and a nice bull to boot.  I had back surgery in 2004 (not fusion just a clean out of a bulged disc) so I'm glad you were able to make it.

If you don't mind sharing, what unit were you hunting?

Western third of Wyoming, and not just one unit in particular, multiple to be frank.  Not alot of elk, just little pockets that take many years to figure out.  I suggest to those that want to hunt Wyoming, save up points and do your research for units. The way I do it, it's definitely the harder way with lower numbers of elk in the area that I hunt, you have to find the pockets where they hold up, it takes years to figure out and for most hunting out of state is once every three to four years for money reasons, I still say get points and find a quality unit with plenty of elk, good luck!

Thanks!!!
The weather has taken a serious change this week.  Snowing and snow levels dipping to 5k later this week.  I was talking with a friend of mine last night who lives back there.  He was out that afternoon doing a little grouse hunting very near where we will be and stomping around in 3" of the fresh white.
He said the woods went quiet of bugles late last week.
He has heard an occasional wolf throughout the summer talking.
Did you hear a wolf when you were there?

Not us, but some other hunters just North of where you will be said they heard them three nights in a row, one sheep heard had 15 killed in one night and one sheep dog killed too! It's sad the elk population was hit hard this las twinter now the wolves are starting to make a bigger impact upon the area as well.  Few more Grizzly sitings this year as well. No snow for us while I was back there for the first time, just some frosty mornings as usual.  They had lost thirty percent of the calf's this year as well, not good for the future. :(
