Margaret Bull; Access recommendations for scouting?
« on: October 07, 2011, 11:29:23 PM »
I usually bow hunt for elk, but injured my shoulders around permit application time.  After years of putting in for Margaret Archery, I end up drawing a Margaret Rifle bull tag.

Any recommendations for access and approach to scout or hunt would be appreciated.  I am considering taking a mountain bike, if that is helpful.  Thanks.

You cannot access the 2500 from highway 504 anymore. I think the access gate is the 2502 from 504. If the gates are open you can always go up the 1900 to the 500 and take a right on the 517 cross the river and your hunting! Weyco. sold off all the lakes so don't plan on going there. I heard they where handing out tickets during muzzy season. If a guy was looking for a bull he might start by walking around the 2802 area  ;) , good luck!

If I were to hunt that area I would take the USFS rd. 26 on the back sde of Stawberry Mountain, and take the trail (I think its USFS Trail 214) up that splits the Margaret area and the Loo-wit area.  That way early morning you will be up higher on the ridge with the wind blowing up (less chance of them winding you).  There are usually 2 heards that are in that area with a lot of nice bulls.  I hope this helps and GOOD LUCK!!!  I have been putting in for that tag for about 10 years glad to see someone was lucky enough to get it.

The 2500 gate has been closed for over a year now. You can still access the 2500 rd system, you just have use the 500.

I drew a Marg. cow tag so I took the mtn bike over and went scouting middle of Sept.. All the gates were closed 'cept one and they were logging up there. Rode in aways til it was all up hill and came back. Walked in on one for an hour or so and it was all up hill. Didn't see or hear anything but saw a few tracks. Tried the bugle a couple of times, no response. I'm hoping it's a lot better around the 23rd of Nov.. Has anyone known of snow up there in November?
I think I'll plan another scouting trip in a couple weeks.
Good luck!
