.300 Savage Question

New poster here...In the market for a decent scope for my .300 Savage.  It doesn't appear to have holes or pins.  Not sure how much I should expect to pay for a good scope and to have someone mount it for me.  Any suggestions?

if u dont have the scope mount and need it drilled and taped the cost is roughly 20$ a hole and there is 4 holes that need to be done then he has to install it all  so wat ur looking at is roughly 150 maybe more or less.

If your Savage 99 is in original condition and not D&T'd or a butt pad installed it might be advisable to get an estimate on it.  They are getting to be very colectable and D&Ting them wil ruin any collector intrest.  You can find a couple of different mounts that will work without drilling, but they are spendy.

I've been selling off my 99's because I can't shoot open or peep sights any longer instead of D&Ting them.  There are alot of Savages that are already drilled that are pretty reasonable.

If you have a Savage 99 agree with above.. do not drill and tap it... buy another rifle...

If it is not a Savage 99 then yes, it will be about 150.00 plus scope.

Not a bad round for deer and close range elk.  My mom and dad shot 300 Savages for everything and killed a lot of animals.

Thanks for the feedback.  I love the rifle but had no idea that having pins drilled and scope mounted would "tarnish" the classic. 

Good advice...I'm in the market for a Model 70 anyway.  I'll leave the 99 as is.

Cool to see another '99 owner, here is mine in 250-3000, it was given to me a little over 20 years ago just like this.

I cant speak for the 300, but they arent the most accurate rifle you can buy, just enjoy it for what it is and buy something else to modify.

I killed my first muley/deer with a 99 just like that one! Fun guns to shoot, wish I could find one like that for my kids.

Great! Glad you are going to keep that 99 original! What cal are you going to look for in a m-70?

I'm thinking the .270...I plan on testing out .270, .300, and .30-06 but not dead set on anything at this point.

Any recommendations/revews?

If this is going to be your "one bolt gun" then I'd go with the 30-06 or 300WM.
Definitely take a look at the Featherweights.  Best looking rifle out there, in my opinion (yes, I own one in 30-06).  I see you're not too far away from me - I'll let you run a few rounds through it if you wanted to check it out sometime.

Ive told this story a hundred times probably but I was lent a model 99 308 for my first hunting rifle and I sure as hell didnt want to give it back when the time came. It was pretty dam accurate as well. PERFECT west side gun. Short and easy to handle but still had decent range for the clear cuts and enough knock down for elk. I think Im gunna look around in some pawnshops to buy my own

My 30-30 99 is a sub moa gun. I dont know what you consider accurate to be out of a lever gun but anything that shoots that good will kill game if you do your part for a long way.

Sub moa is NOT the norm for these rifles.

I've had a number of Savage 1899 and 99's and other than the a take down model 250-3000(even that one was an honest 200+yrd deer rifle) they were quite accurate, accurate as a bolt action of the same era.  The older 250's can get a bad rap with modern 100gr ammo because they were built with a 1-14 twist rifling for a flatbase 87gr bullet and are just on the cusp to stabillize a 100gr bullets some will most won't.

My first rifle was a 300 Savage and I took deer, bear and elk with it. I did not have any complaints about accuracy but I also knew its limitations. When I started hunting areas with potentials of 400 yard shots, I bought a 300 WM. I still grab the Savage when the circumstances dictate. I love that old rifle and have full confidence in its ability to put game down.
