I got a grouse!
« on: October 08, 2011, 09:52:07 PM »
Well, I go to school at CWU.  Haven't spent much time grouse hunting in the past, so I thought I would give it a whirl. I hopped in the truck and took my trusty break action 20 gauge mod choke.  Hiked up an old logging road I figured had grouse.  Saw three in about a half hour and luckily was able to nail one of them.  It was actually a bit of a rush!  Hiking up the road I flushed two from a nearby tree into a thicket.  So I put the stalk to them.  I wen't to where I saw them touch back down and saw a few twigs move about 10 yards from me. I stood still and then I see this head poke up, and then disappear.  Poke up, then disappear.  Then I saw the little guy trot off through the thicket in a dark spot.  I put the bead on the head and let er rip.  The bird didn't feel a thing.  I was using federal #6, 2-3/4" game loads.  Got it all dressed out and the meat is in the freezer.  Going to eat it next weekend when I am home with my parents.  My dad always loves to eat game meat.  As do I.

Needless to say, I am sold on grouse hunting.  It is fun!  Also another great way to spend time in the woods.

PS - I heard one of them drumming away, that was the first time I have heard that before.  At first I thought it was my heart beat  :chuckle:

Dont give away your spot to other C-WOO dorks. Make them suffer. Thats what I always did.

Good job. That gun looks sweet.

"PS - I heard one of them drumming away, that was the first time I have heard that before.  At first I thought it was my heart beat"

Grouse make that drumming sound? I thought some sort of owl did that? I hear that noise all the time and usually see a big bird where the noise is coming from but I figured they were owls. I thought grouse were like on the ground all the time.. I guess I just need to learn more about identifying a grouse because I see a bunch of unidentified birds all the time in the woods,  If theyre grouse and I could shoot them, then Ive been missing out.
