Kodiak Canvas tent
« on: October 09, 2011, 08:08:03 PM »
So were looking on getting a tent and leaning towards getting a 10x10 kodiak canvas tent from sportsmens warehouse. We've done a lot of research on them and they seem to be pretty tough reliable tents. They have the built in rubber floor that seems very tough. Do any you guys have this tent?? If so what do you think of it?

If you are going to spend the money on a canvas, go bigger.
I have a montana canvas 14X17 and it is about perfect for 2 individuals and gear.

I agree with CplRaines.  Go bigger....  I have a 12X14 that is comfortable for two, & I have a ten foot cookshack.  For the little more you pay, you will have much more space and be much more comfortable.  I would also recommend 5 foot walls if you have an option of 4 or 5.  A 10X10 is a pretty small tent...

Also, I would skip the sewn in floors....  go with tarps or washable canvas drop cloth.  Easier to setup and takedown.

thanks guys that information is useful. It would be just my wife and i staying in the tent and i'm sure she will have a lot of gear and misc stuff. They also have a 10x14' kodiak canvas tent for a 100$ more than what the 10x10 was. The walls are 5.5'. the 10x10 is definently ruled out, I'm thinking on learning more towards the 10x14'. That will give us a little more room and space to work around.

will a tarp laid out over the floor work also?? This was another idea i was thinking about but just wasnt sure. the area we hunt has had some very strong winds in the past. We've gone down there staying in a small coleman tent and i was woken up in the night by my wife in fear because the top of the tent was a few inches from our face due to the wind pushing it down. all information that you guys give me is good informartion. With a few weeks left till we leave for hunting i'm looking at all ideas.

Make sure the tent has sod cloth.  The sod cloth will lay on the inside of the tent floor, about 10 inches in attached to the canvas walls at the bottom.  Then, lay your tarp over the sod cloth along the interior floor.  The frame poles rest ontop of both the tarp and cloth which gives you a good seal to the ground.  I always lay other heavier items along the inside if any areas pop up.   Check craigslist too.... Ive seen a few decent deals posted lately... Some rainer tents, etc.  I would skip the army tents due to size, weight, light and difficulty setting up.  Send me a PM if you need any other info.

I have the 10x14 Kodiak, it is a great tent. The Kodiak's come with a sewn in floor which is great for early season, warm weather camping. Keeps out all of the insects, mice, and snakes! We use it a lot during the summer for family camping.  About this time of the year I switch over to my canvas wall tents. A 12x16 butted up to a 12x12. No floor is the way to go when you are bringing in moisture from rain or snow. We lay a tarp down, with indoor/outdoor carpet over that. Add a wood stove and it is home, sweet home!

i looked heavily at the kodiak before buying my tent, snow load was an issue for me with little to no roof pitch. i ended up with a montana canvas spike tent. love it!

The Kodiak is so easy to set up it crazy.  The Sown in floor is awesome as well!  I own both Montana canvas and a Kodiak.  The Kodiak is great for two guy trips, it wont get wet inside from rain or snow and it will hold up to very heavy winds.  The bag it comes in is sweet also and fits nicely, with handles to carry it around.  I give it a 10 out of 10 for a well designed and built tent!

I got the bigger version and it's been great.  Set it up from end of august through last weekend and it endured weeks of rain with no problem.  Snow would be a problem, so keep a broom around, but you can't beat the ease of set up and the quality of the tent.  I had puddles in the awning but a drop leaked through.

Here is a sentence you never hear while hunting....."Dang, we just have too much room!"
Get the bigger version.
Not a fan of the floor, but get the sod cloth.
Also, are you going to use a small wood stove? I would be VERY nervous about a tent that can't handle much of a snow load (season depending of course).
