Sorry to hear that. Yesterday my son shot one and kind of the same thing happened I was so busy talking him through where to aim and he fired before I thought he would he is only 9 yr old and his second deer! Couldn't really tell where it was hit but it acted hurt as it ran in the brush. I had him wait for about 30 min (wich is no small feat with a little guy who just wants to see his deer) where we shot from when we got to where the deer stood we found hair and good blood witch went for about 30 yards before it pretty much stopped bleeding. I and my hunting partner who showed up after he heard the shot took turns on hands and knees for about an hour trying to determine witch way the deer went only found light speckles on a few oak leafs I finally thought I had the direction of travel left my partner at last blood and my son and I made small circles and we eventually found the deer after it traveled 100 yards he hit it a little far back but took out the liver and part of a lung.
Not to make ya feel worse but when that happens it could be a fatal hit! Unfortunately it happens hope they find it for ya!
