Elk Raffle Update (no pics)
« on: October 17, 2011, 09:16:53 AM »
I haven't been real good with updates but watched a cool rut exchange this weekend I thought I would share.

It wasn't ideal last week with the rut winding down and the massive amount of deer hunters moving in (thankfully most of them don't leave the road) but I still saw several elk and had a good time and met some great guys.  Overall, probably saw 12-15 bulls.  One nice 350' bull that came screaming out of the timber at about 150 yds.  Didn't even bugle him because another bull was screaming so I was just beating a tree and he didn't like it..... :chuckle:

Saw another 365-370' bull that would have been tempting if his right side was the equivalent of his left.  Also saw a small 280' bull about 200 yds from a bear in the same clearing.  Was pretty cool....

But, the exchange between two other bulls was priceless and I wish I could have videod it.  There were two bulls screaming at each other in two draws of timber separated by about 300 yds of an open hillside.  We could see a few cows in a draw and could get glimpses of the bull but not a real good look.  Finally, nine cows came single file out of the timber followed by a small 6x6 right toward the other draw and elk.  As they worked toward the other draw we could tell they were going to run right into the other herd of elk.  As the cows filed into the timber the bull we couldn't see ripped out a scream and the small bull hesitated before entering and started thrashing on a tree.  About that time we finally saw the other bull on a dead run through the timber coming right at the small guy.  The small 6x6 gave an "oh sh*t" and realized this other bull was going to kick his butt and he turned and ran about 50 yds.  The other bull came out of the timber on a dead run and we could tell he was a lot bigger.  He was probably around a 340' bull but had a really cool frame and nice dark horns.  As soon as he got out of the timber he bellowed again at the small bull to get the hell away from his cows.  When the small one wouldn't leave he took off after him again and chased him about 200 yds more yards up the hill before circling back into the draw with his cows and the nine new ladies who joined the party.

Was a lot of fun to watch......

However, the hunt just turned from fun to serious.  I'm now well into double digits hunting and will probably lay low until all the other seasons are over.  This will put me into mid Nov. and it starts getting a little more stressful to find the right bull.  I know he's out there though!

Did you not get a chance to out in the woods during late sept??? I would think the best hunting has already passed, as far as getting a monster bull in the rut.

THanks for the update.   Thats the best part of hunting I think, all the exchanges, stalks and viewing prior to the shot.  Then its just work.   Anticipation is the best part.

I got the privilege of getting to hunt with RaffleMule for those couple of days and am happy to report that he's doing the tag justice.  For a wet-side office worker, he's in better shape than myself and anyone I know.  We hiked multiple miles in tough country each day, and he never even started breathing hard.  He knows what caliber of bull he wants and has passed on plenty of bulls that 99% of hunters would not be able to pass in his shoes.  He's a great guy to BS with in the truck and is a very knowledgeable elk hunter.

If anyone knows of a monster, but is unsure whether to share the location, then rest assured that you'd be helping one of the good guys!  (Just use PM's to keep it out of the public eye).
Bring a GPS!  It's awkward to have to eat your buddies!

He must have bought a treadmil after hunting with us last year.  :chuckle: Just kidding Brad. Todd is right, Brad gets after it.

I found a 400" in the Teanaway Brad. I will give you a call on Dec. 10th to help me pack it out.  :chuckle:

Thanks for the update and good luck.  It must have been hard to pass a 350" and a 365" bull.  Man!

To be honest, it's not that difficult to pass up big bulls.  It might be the fact I saw one masher bull and when you see a bull of that magnitude it completely changes your perspective.  It was almost majestic in the way he walked, moved and carried himself.  It's hard to explain but it was just different.....

I'll know the bull when I see it.

The question is will I see it?  I'll be happy if I end up with a 350' bull but I would really like to see the one which gives me goosebumps.
