Your odds of getting one of them is pretty great, the odds of the rest of them getting you are even greater.

This has never happened to me and with my short temper I hope it never does. I did however meet a couple guys elk hunting a few years back that had this happen. I was driving into my spot (a little later than I had antcipated) and watched a guy drill a nice sized bull with his .375 H&H. Elk bucked back a little bit and stumbled into the woods. Few hours go by and I start thinking if that guy dropped one a few hundred yards away there is no way that they will be back in this cut today. On my way out I see the two guys standing by there truck on the side of the road, and I park it to see if they need any help. The guy who took the shot tells me that no sooner did they get into the woods then a group of guys approach him and his friend openly displaying thier sidearms asking them if they had seen where the elk they just shot went. He tried to explain that it was his elk, he took the shot, and he was about to look for it so he didn't know exactly where it was. The response he got was something along the lines of "It's my elk if you know whats good for you." I couldn't believe what I was hearing from him, it was making me pissed off. He explained it in the best possible way you can. He still has many more years of hunting left and there were many more bulls in the woods, that his life wasn't worth a good meal, and that those guys will have to live with their shame and guilt the rest of their lives.

I on the other hand like you would be seething and don't know how I would react. Keep at it, you will get another one.

Sorry to hear about your deer. That really sucks.

When I was living in New England, there would sometimes be full scale shooting wars in the woods. Normally yahoos frm NYC.

Nobody wins that game.

You did the smart thing.

Your daughter will thank you for it.

Too bad you didn't get thair plates, though.

Now, chin up, and go get a better one!

You need a sidearm...

Oh I have one and am very proficient with it. I am a rookie to hunting but not with guns in general. What good is my 9mm personal carry weapon against 5 guys all with their rifles? It didn't matter to them. I am headed out I can't stay out of the woods, yesterday was like my first hit of crack. None of the others are going to be as good as the first but I need more. Gonna stay away from that area today and hit a cut that really don't look like it will hold anything because it is too new but what the hell there is good timber all around so maybe I will get lucky and have one step out to dry off and warm up, it isn't supposed to be as wet today and I did see a good amount of doe in the area last night.

I bet they are back there today.  Go get the numbers.   Its a heresay thing now but.......

I had a guy take a two point from me.  H enever fired a shot.   I saw him go to the deer and when I got there he had tagged it.  He said Better luck next time.     If I'd have said a word one of us would be dead.   Not worth it.   I went and killed a bigger buck.  It all worked out.  Maybe it will for you too.

My brother shot his first buck, a nice whitetail in the Methow.  At the time, a rare occurence.   Same thing.  He shot it, and a guy tried to take it from him saying it was his.  He never fired a shot.  My brother was smart enough to go to the neighbors and my friends Dad happened to be home.   He went and dealt with the situation and my brother got his buck.

ATVs have nothing to do with this story. It's the guys who stole the deer and that's it.
I couldn't care less about what anybody says..............

That is why I try to bring a camera with me.  Sometimes I do forget but a picture is worth a 1000 words.  Post their faces on as many places as possible and this crap will stop happening.   Technology is getting better and cheaper all the time.  You can buy those glasses that have a camera on it but they are expensive give it a few years and those glasses will be under 100 dollars. Then you can record the entire event and post it up.

My son (11 at the time) and I shot a buck about 25 yards away, then had some turkey taking pot shots at us from 350 yards.  He unloaded his gun at the buck, & we had bullets and rocks flying all around us.  The buck was hurt bad by our shot, so soon as the guy ran out of shells I ran over there and dumped him for good.  Then the guy had the balls to truck down the hill to try to claim the buck.  By then, I had it gutted & tagged.

There are all kinds of nut cases out there.  I got held at gunpoint by a rifle hunter over a 4pt buck that I found laying in the woods, ungutted.  I gutted the buck out, since nobody showed up for 2 hours.  I guess the guys wife shot it and didn't know what to do, so she left it in the woods.  So the guy accused me of stealing last year's buck and the year before that.  Stuck his loaded 7mm in my gut and made me empty my pants.  I didn't even want the damn buck.  Told him to take it.  Congrats, nutcase!

All that is why I switched to black powder or stick to the highest hills.  Seems like the terrain deters guys like that.  Most guys I meet up in the rocky hills are pretty darned good men.

Sorry to hear about your buck, but you did the right thing.
