H.S. Scent A-Way... I'm impressed
« on: October 23, 2011, 10:53:14 PM »
My son and I got done with a great weekend of bonding and continuing the hunting heritage. We hunted Unit 117 in NE WA because the youth and seniors had a special four day hunt where they could take an antlerless deer in the four point restricted unit. We had a great time even though neither of us got a deer. On Saturday we decided we would have more opportunity by going in and waiting for the deer to move out of their bedding area and into the clearing where we had seen tons of sign. We got settled in around 4:30 pm an proceeded to wait. Being 14, my son can hardly sit still. He fidgeted, he took his hat off, he scratched his head, yawned, etc. All typical things of a bored teenager. I was sitting about fifteen feet away and told him to him to settle down with hand signals. About that time I saw two other hunters walk up the powerline road to our right. Luckily they were being quiet and we found out later that they had seen us and were leaving the area, so as not to disturb our hunt (thanks guys!). Right after that I heard something to our left and "shhhd" my son and pointed. He turned around and had a two point buck at twenty feet. I saw him grab his rifle, but he didn't do much more, so I leaned forward to see the deer turning around. It didn't go far. The buck saw my son move and turned and flagged then looked at my son, walked down in the clearing waving his tail occasionally and looking back at my son. I had been checking the wind occasionally since we had got there and it was blowing right to left and directly to where the buck fed to twenty feet from my son and thirty feet from me. The buck knew my son was there due to his movement, but he had no idea what he was. The forky moved seventy-five yards below us and stood broadside looking toward us. He finally started feeding and wandered off. I have to say that I am sold on Hunter Specialties Scent A-Way. I bought a the package with two spray bottles and one big bottle. Before leaving the truck we sprayed down front and back and the inside and outside of our hats. I don't think there was any way that buck would have gotten within twenty yards of us less than twenty feet that it actually did without having this product on. If my son hadn't moved to look at the buck I have to wonder how close it would have actually come. We ended the evening with eight deer seen in the clearing below us, including two more two points, but no opportunities for my son. Even though we ended the weekend deerless it was still a success. My son had his heart in his throat multiple times and will have some memories that he or I will never forget. Thanks Hunter Specialties.
