Observatory modern any bull permit.
« on: October 25, 2011, 09:58:06 PM »
Anyone seeing any elk as of this last weekend? I have been from Quartz Mt, Shoe String Trail, Gnat flats to Joe Watt. Sun, Mon and Tuesday. With a pack on my back, from the dark timber bottoms to the timbered ridges down lower. I've done a bunch of glassing and haven't even seen a cow. Cut very little fresh track and have spoke to a truck load of deer hunters leaving and one gentleman claimed to have seen a rag horn 5 point with 3 cows between Frost Meadows and Quarts right on the main road mid last week.

I packed it up and came back(Wenatchee), I saw a bunch of mule deer. Several respectable bucks along with 3 or 4 spikes and several 3 points. Haven't decided to go back for Saturdays main event to see if everyone running amuck might stir somthing up or just pitch the permit and run up the Clockum and whack a spike. The weather just isn't there for the Observatory. I know there are some elk there but by the time they settle down from all the deer hunters, there will be a ton of traffic by Thursday along with a chain saw buzzing in every camp. What surprised me was the lack of fresh sighn especialy several basin back into the Shoe String?

You're seriously considering eating that bull tag and going to the colockum or what ever the hell it is? Nonsense!

Stick with it. Looking at the weather there is a chance of snow in the higher eleveations starting tomorrow all the way through next week. Stay up around quartz and the elk will show up. I have a cow tag in the taneum and Im planning on hunting from Quartz to Lookout. Maybe see ya on top of Quartz.

I ran into some guys with that tag today while i was pheasant hunting...

Were nice guys and I felt bad that they weren't seeing much.

Started driving out and figured I would glass for some elk. Found a 42 head herd with 5 or 6 bulls. Jumped in the truck and sped back up the hill in search for the guys. Found them and asked how big of bull they were looking for. "Any bull with horns" they said so I said "Follow me"...

3 hours later and a 2 mile stalk = 2 bulls down.

My good deed for the century. I was very happy to have helped these nice guys out.

No way should anyone ever give up on that tag.  :bdid: That area may be slow from time to time but I usually start seeing the bigger bulls about mid to the end of the week. Last year I saw 2 huge bulls 1 respectable 5x and 1 rag horn on the last Friday within 2 hours of day light before that the whole week it was 1 cow and calf. When the people show up the animals will feel the heat and start moving more in the day. Don't give up they will show themselves.  :) Good luck!

Get back out there NOW! This first week is your best chance. DON'T wait for saturday. Some times it takes more than 2 days to fill a tag. :bash:

An old guy I know drew the 1 rifle rut tag in there and killed a 7x7. I haven't seen any pics yet. There was a couple other bulls killed in there with the archery guys.

Don't fall into the trap. Hunting is-and always will be- about the hunt, the adventure, the views, and time spent with close friends and family. " Ryan Hatfield

Bigger - Stay with it and keep your head up.  It only takes a second for your season to change.
I would hunt that tag until the last minute of dark on the last day of the season.
Keep your mental game strong and you will fill your tag.  The elk are there!
