Scoring mule deer tips
« on: October 27, 2011, 08:11:07 PM »
Well my dad and I are leaving real soon for our colorado hunt and was wanting a few more tips to field judging mulies. What does it take to get 180"? Is there a good rule of thumb like how they say it takes a 6x6 bull to have 20" tines to get 400". Just wondering if there is a similar type scenario for mulies, thanks

Just remember if it Looks Big, it probably is Big.  a 180 buck is a beauty and takes a lot of bone to add up to 180 inches.  Look for deep forks; especially in the fronts which can often be weak.  Look for eyeguards/browtines.  Nice brows can add 6-8+ inches to a rack in a hurry.  Don't get too hung up on outside spread as it is a novelty measurement.  Often bucks with a large outside spread give up main beam lengths or weak backs.  There are more 26-28" typical bucks in the books than 30+ inchers.  Mass adds up real fast also and is generally sign of a mature deer.   Have fun and good luck.  I wouldn't get too hung up on a  "number."  If he looks big and is something you'd be happy to hang on the wall, let the lead fly. Good Luck.
