Elk in the palouse?

So im quarantined from elk camp in the 340/342 this year due to health issues. So im going to try and fill my tag with any elk out in the 139. Ive seen elk but was wondering if anyone could possibly point me towards a disgruntled farmer with some consistent elk. Also if anyone has hunted elk out there how do you go about it? just sit and wait or do you try and track them down. Im used to hunting white tails out here and the prospects of an elk hunt seem a little...strange.

Go play the lottery.  When you win pay for a guided elk hunt in New Mexico.  Because your chances of that happening are alot higher than scoring on an elk.

well based on the kind of luck I had during the deer season I dont think either of those things could ever happen. haha

On a serious note those elk are SO MOBILE.  Its hard to tell where they will be.  The only way you can figure them out is get a plane fly around and look for them and then wait the required 24 hours to go hunt them.  Of course 24 hours later they could be in the next GMU.

Actually the elk are doing very well out there.  Go knock on some doors around the Almota grade  and east towards Penewawa, they are consistently in that area and the farmers want them gone.

One of the biggest bulls I've ever seen in my life I saw while pheasant hunting private ground in the Penewawa area.  No trees for miles around, wheat as far as you could see

I grew up in Colfax and have hunted everywhere around 142 and 139 for almost 20 years and have only seen elk a handfull of times, but they are around.  I have tried hunting them twice without any luck.  My suggestion is to burn lots of gas.  Cover as much country as you can and try to spot them.  If you do spot some elk, figure out who's ground they are on then try to get permission.  Almota/Penewawa area is a good area.  All along the Wa/Id border you can spot elk.  The move back and forth quite a bit.  Up around Tekoa Mtn. might be good too.  My dad who couldn't get time off to join us in the Blues for elk season will be trying his luck same as you.  Good Luck.

I didn't say they were not doing well I'm just saying seeing them or getting permission to hunt with a rifle is gonna be hard.

It's been years since I have been down there, but getting permission to hunt some private land is key.  We used to run into them all over out there in the late 90s during deer season (I have some pictures-ill post them if I can find them-pretty cool to see a bull elk in the middle of a burnt out wheat field). 

There are farmers that want them gone, and others who want them there.  If you can get a spot, really the only way to hunt that area is to get some elevation, sit tight and glass, and hope something comes your way. You will push animals around if you are driving out there, and unless you have permission to hunt on multiple adjoining farms, you won't get close enough for a shot.  Bring your coyote gun, you will get action if you are patient.  Also, you probably know this already, but the farms are not delineated by fences out there, you can easily trespass unless you know the ground well.  Good luck.
