Any Swakane late rifle tips?
« on: October 31, 2011, 10:03:13 PM »
I have a younger friend who drew a late swakane buck tag. He came to me this evening asking for some help on his hunt i know it is kinda last minute but if any of you guys or gals have some tips you could send my way for him it would be much appreciated. I am going to try to fill my blue mountins whitetail tag and give him some help glassing.
thanks -Matt

Just for kicks here is the buck i am hoping for on my tag

Yeah--hunt the steepest, most rugged inaccessible places in the canyon.  that's where the big bucks are this time of year.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Bring some good glass and use it. Pick a high vantage point, wear out some boot leather and enjoy, thats beautiful country and an awesome tag.

With our upcoming forcast, tell him to carry chains for all 4 and don't be afraid to use them.  Those roads tend to get really slick and everything seems to have quite a drop off.

I had this tag last year and hunted the hell out it.  I saw more dink 2 points than I have ever seen.  The weather was warm last year until the very last weekend and that is when I finally took the first mature deer i saw.  He was one of those very heavy mature 2 points, but I heard of other guys doing better that last weekend.  That hunt is very weather dependant in my opinion.  It is some beautiful country and I had a great time hunting it.  I pulled my buck off of the west side of Derby canyon up towards the top.  This is the buck that I pulled out of there.

Chains all around. Gear as low as you go. Glass and more glass. Post pictures of the beast. Good luck.
