Toutle Bulls
« on: November 03, 2011, 01:23:00 PM »
Post all Toutle bulls, past or present, here! I'm headed out for the Toutle for the whole next week, so hopefully me and my dad will both be able to add pictures to this list. Want to see some nice Roosies that have come out of that unit to get me even more excited before I go (if that's even possible)!

I'll either be in a 2007 black F150 with an NRA sticker on the back or a 94 red Pathfinder with a tire on top. If I see your truck, I expect to see a nice rack hanging over the bed.

Which ever way you choose to define rack leads to a good picture.

Not to many nice Rosies come out of Toutle, you would think a controlled unit like this would have 300+ inch plus bulls running around but that's not the case, you would be fortunate with a 250 class bull.  Typical bull you will get will be just a decent 5, genetics just aren't there.  Live here and hunted every inch of that unit my whole life.  You will however see a ton of elk, and if you don't wear a blind fold you should end up killing a bull.  The better bulls I've seen in that unit have been on the Kalama River side, Coweman Lake area, Elk Mountain and those surrounding areas.  Good luck to you all, ill for sure be checking in on this thread to see what comes of it.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

Good luck guys. I'm headed down right now with my dad (he has a tag). We will be camped down by Silver Lake in the campground on the hill. We saw a nice 5x5 last Sunday that we are hoping is still in the same area.

I was scouting for a cow down there last weekend for my late archery tag.  We spotted a spike off the 4100, about 150 yards off the road.  We sat there watching him for around half an hour.  Do you think anyone with a bull tag in there pocket would drive by?  Heck no!  There were a couple guys that stopped, had bull tags, but for a different unit.  They got lost on the maze of logging roads.

Bummer deal, I couldn't even give a bull away...  :chuckle:

I bet a lot of people get "lost" in Toutle unit when they don't have an elk permit for the Toutle.

My raghorn 4x3 and my dad's spike from Toutle. Story will come later now that the site is back up, once I get some of this work done! Passed up the biggest bull I saw on opening morning and spent the rest of the week kicking myself. Anyway, meat in the freezer and a fun hunt (curse the weather). Long story to come later.

I hunt with 4 guys that are a bit older (65 to 74) and they got bull tags for toutle.  I got late cow tags (same unit), I went out to help pull elk/ scout for my cow.  We scouted hard and had many nice bulls patterned.  After deer season they (I do not know) started running helicopters breaking up the herds, and spooking them badly.  It was a bit of a kick in the stones because I started scouting the state land in July.  We still did ok but did not find the bigger bulls (5 to 7 point) again.  Good luck

I had the same problem. Scouted in the summer, located at least 4 nice bulls, but came back to find the herds severely spooked and could not locate the bigger boys. The weather didn't help, neither did the litany of people hunting the roads. I did not realize that they had given out a bunch of tags for October 1-7. The total tag count for the Toutle was around 823, that seems really steep to me. It made for a tougher hunt than I expected, but in the end, I was just glad that I did not eat tag soup.
