181 Couse cow elk advice
« on: November 16, 2011, 07:50:46 PM »
Before applying for this permit I talked to the local bio, and he made it sound promising. I talked to a couple of the land owners he suggested and both told me the elk were few and far between, and I should look at the other side of the unit, where I have not done any research. I have several names for the west side of the unit, where the elk appearenly are not, but none where the problem elk are supposed to be. Ant help would be appreciated.

I also have this tag. Assuming you have the muzzy Jan 1st - 20th. You're right to start looking west. Just keep heading west until you run out of real estate. If you did secure permission on the east side that's ok too. It just takes a hell of a lot of snow to drive them over that far. Keep that land in your back pocket just in case that global warming kicks back in like it did in '96.  :chuckle:

On a side note, I talked to a landowner who informed me that they made some repairs to that damned elk fence this year. Not sure how that's going to affect travel routes but it's something to keep in mind.

Just reread my post. I should have said west side towards the river.

We have tags for the Dec hunt, when putting in I was concerned the January hunt would have too much snow.

I have a buddy that gets that tag almost every year and typically the elk are gone from the east  side (river side) by that time of year.  You are going to find the elk on the westside of the unit in the timber.  Good luck with your guys hunts!!! I will be in 181 the week after thanksgiving hunting whitetails with my muzzy.  Awesome area to hunt!!!!

I'm heading there tomorrow to hunt chukar.  I hunt on the east side of the unit, haven't seen elk there but lots of deer.  Going to stop off in Pomeroy and try for some pheasant on the way over.  Good luck on your hunt.

Wow, is my memory fading. I should have checked the map again before I posted. Appearently my mind had the map turned 90 degrees. Should I focus on the northwest or the southwest portion of the unit?
