Alta muzzy buck down
« on: November 27, 2011, 09:04:16 PM »
Well I filled my Alta muzzy buck tag this weekend,  it started out great after spotting some nice smaller bucks and good numbers of does I figured that it would be a matter of time before I located the buck that I was looking for, my goal was to shoot one that was around 24 inch spread and had some mass, this was the first late buck hunt for me so I didnt know what to expect. I spotted this buck late in the day with only 30 minutes of shooting light left and decided to take the shot, I knew that it was only a 2 point but it filled all the requirements that  I set for myself, the tag was good for any buck and as far as I am concerned this deer is as nice as they come with a 26 1/2 inch spread its a trophy.

Good job.  Good to see a big 2pt get killed and taken out of the gene pool.

Nice buck. I would've taken it with a muzzleloader, no doubt. It's obvious from looking at its face and the size of the body that it's a mature buck.

So how far was the shot and what bullet were you using?

I shot it with the 295 powerbelts, from 40 yards, I spotted it from 600 yards away, standing under a large pine tree with 2 does, figured out that I could sidehill from above him and get within 100 yards, I was surprised to see he was so close when I got into place, got the shooting sticks out and one shot to the neck he fell in his tracks.

Good job!! Looks like you hunted lower in the unit. There are some big bucks in there if a person puts in the time and effort.

Definetly a trophy in my book.  I've seen a few in the Alta unit but the 3 point rule didn't allow me to shoot them.  I would not have hesitated if I had your tag!  He doesn't need to breed on either.

I've seen and filmed that deer several times throughout the last couple years.   I almost used my tag on him as well.   There are pics of him alive on here somewhere.   Filmed him pretty close to where you shot him.   NICE

Yes.  He has been a two since I have seen him.   He winter ranges in wolf central, so I have always been impressed with him.   Everytime I have seen him he has been bedded, and he doesn't spook real easy, I wonder if thats the tactic since the wolves usually hunt by sight???

THis was 3 years ago, and I pegged him at 8.5 then.   I must have been wrong.   This was not far at all from where your pic was taken.

Wow what a cool old buck. That is very cool he lasted so long in that area as well. He is a good one to take out as well. A lot of buck regress down over the years. That buck has been a 2 point probably his whole life them. He has passed a lot of that 2 point strain around as well  :chuckle: Very neat

Wow!  You spotted him at 600 yds and then snuck within 40 yds.  You must of been a military sniper to have the stealthy sneaking skills to get that close in open country.  And then to get a good neck shot and not ruin any meat.  Your my hero Dave.  What a model hunter!
