Refurbishing a bow?
« on: November 24, 2011, 08:57:39 PM »
So my grandfather passed away earlier this year after fighting liver cancer.  I was on deployment and was sent home to see him before he passed but as I was flying over the Atlantic IT happened.  I spent a week with my grandma going through all of his hunting/fishing gear to help decide who would want what. This man had enough stuff to start his own sporting goods store and she wanted us to be able to use it at an enjoy it now.  My uncle is an only son and my brother and I are the only grandsons so it was decided that we had a certain precedence over these sort of things.  I really just wanted stuff to remember him by.  Up in the attic was an old Bear Whitetail compund bow(1978-1979?).  As soon as I saw it my Uncle looked at me and said "Take it."  He knew.  My grandfather was an amazing man and a huge influence in my life as an outdoorsman.

So now i have this wicked looking old bow and would like to get it refurbished and ready to hunt.  I really want to take a deer with this bow but I want to make sure it is safe to shoot.  It is in pretty good shape overall.  Some of the paint is chipped and it definately needs to be restrung.  I think it is partly made of some sort of glass from what my uncle tells me?  Anyways, I would like to get it looking new-ish and safe to to shoot.  What is the best way to go about this?  Should I try to take it to a pro-shop or contact Bear archery directly or just try to clean it up myself? Here is an example of what the bow looks like.  Mine is still in MI at my grandma's house. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.  Sorry for the long post.

My advice would be to hang it someplace where you can look at it and remember Grandpa.  You can get a new string, but any other parts will be almost impossible to get.  Bear archery has changed hands several times since that bow was made.

If it's convenient you can bring it into Sportsman's Warehouse in Puyallup, and I'll take a look at it for you.
Hunt hard and shoot straight!

I might just do that.  I'm going to have it sent out here soon so I guess I'll see when it gets here.  Thanks.
