got that in a text, from a buddy who knows the guy who was allowed to tag it.  He'd been hunting it for most of the season.  It was coming into his hay pile from across a major road.  My buddy joked the other day that the buck would probably get hit by a car coming to his hay pile....well, guess what happened.  The guy was at the buck when the gammie arrived and asked if he could use his archery tag on the buck and was granted permission, so at least it won't go to waste...nice buck.

I would gladly pay my deductible on my jeep for a buck like that. Wouldn't even tap the brake..... Awesome buck and that's great that someone benefited from it!

Not the story I heard norsepeak. I heard that the buck ended up going with the fish and game officer. Whoever found it was getting ready to cut the head off when a state trooper showed up. The state trooper then called fish and game and they came out and picked it up. I will do some checking and see what I can find out. I am in law enforcement as well so give me a few days but I will find out.

Its up to the gammies. If you have a valid tag and its during your tag season most of the time they will let you take it.

That was the same story I heard Elkslayer.  They told me that the game officer let the kid take his picture with it and then took the deer into custody.

if they did take it, you could imagine this guy will be on the side of the road catching suckers trying to kill him. it would be real hard for a poacher to pass up a shot on a deer like this.
they call me the bloodhound cause i can track a wounded animal in the rain for 2 days when all it has is a splinter.. sniff sniff awooo

The story probably went like this   :chuckle:

Spotted this buck in the middle of a blacktop clear-cut. Hit it with 5,500lbs of energy at 65MPH using 31” rubber bullets. He didn’t go down right away so it took a back up shot at 25MPH. He’s a good eater, super tender.

All kidding aside it’s great to see it didn’t go to waste.

2  pages in and not a "Why would anyone want a rack that they didn't kill themself" or "I would never want a set of antlers that I didn't kill myself"    Great looking buck.  It is great to see what the NE corner of this state continues to produce.  A real shame someone couldn't have taken him with a gun or bow.

I got basically the same story as Norse except that the kid that hit it was allowed to tag it.  I also saw a pic from a few days before his demise. No way in hell I would say where. I wouldn't have even put up the county on the internet. Come to think of it I heard it was down by Colfax. All the big bucks are down south.

Now that I looked closer at this thread and see this post by norsepeak I buy into it.  Norse is always very good on here and if he says it is a friend of a friend than good by me until proven otherwise.

Dude...it's the internet. That guy with the WA plates was obviously on vacation in Kansas when he hit this buck.

Exactly.

I don't think an auto qualifies as a legal weapon during an archery only season. And besides, It was shot on and from the road so there's another ticket.  :chuckle:

You would think they would allow the little fella to tag it.  Take the meat, etc..  That way the LEO would not have to deal with it and stay on the job to catch bad guys.

BTW, Darn nice buck...

I've heard of both LEO's and Game Wardens allowing people to tag animals that have been hit rather than let the meat go to waste.  Only on a few occasions, so it really is possible. In North Pend Oreille we had a family friends barn collapse on a herd of elk eating the hay.  The Game Department allowed people to tag the elk that were killed.

Just got off the phone with one of the fish and wildlife officers. It seems that the State Trooper had told whoever found the deer to call fish and game. Apparently that never happened. The officer that I talked to is not the Pend Oreille county officer but she is familiar with the incident. Last she heard, which was just a couple days ago, is that they are still looking for this deer.

This could get interesting!

Because it's a giant rack and a good story piece.  I don't "kill" sheds when i pick them up  :dunno:

Yes the thot plickens.

Shouldn't be too hard to find. Officer at the scene should have a pretty good description of him and that could be him in the picture. Along with that could be his license plate in the picture.

Never ceases to amaze me how quick people are to believe that an individual LEO can tell you it's OK to break the law with the logic being, "Hey we don't want it to go to waste".  Think of it from another point of view. If it had been poached, do you think the officer would tell you it's OK to tag it and take it so it wouldn't get wasted?

Not saying LEO's don't make mistakes tho. Recently two Alaska State Troopers asked a young man to accompany them on his quad to help pack out a caribou one of them had shot in the new part of Denali Park.  Turns out only qualified subsistence users are allowed to ride their quads in the park and this young man wasn't and he got written up by the Park Service. The Troopers who did qualify were not written up.

That was sarcasm.  I have lots of antlers and mounts that I have collected over the years.  I appreciate them for what they are like any other piece of art.    I agree, it is a great buck

I'm glad it won't just feed the crows.   Nice animal.  Sad it had to die that way, but maybe thats better than being shredded by wolves.
