Drive up river to fly fishing only area.
Right now is prime time to fish it.
If it flies, it dies.

 :yeah:

Drive slow and scout the river as you drive up.  You can spot a lot of steelhead from the road and than fish over them, but those are better targeted with lures that you can goad them into striking.  I once ran about 12 different lures/color combinations to a nice large hen over the course of an hour.  Finally, a little metallic green hot shot bumping the bottom was ignored by the big gal, but the 6 lber behind her came crashing up and crushed it and gave me a beautiful fight and aerial display.

Sorry to get sidetracked reliving some good times.  Anyway, if you spot fish lazing in the sun then there is a good bet they will move into the nearby tailouts or riffles to feed in early morning or late evening.

The whole river holds fish.  I am not home so I do not remember the name of the man who has nice access to beautiful water.  He will give you a permission card if you are polite.  It helps if you are a local.  There used to be a sign at the top of his driveway called ______ landing.  I am sorry I can't remember.

I will look at my river map to jog my memory of specific locations, because "park by the big tree with the small pullout about 10 miles up just past the red house"  doesn't give you too much to work with.

Just a warning, flyfishing for steelhead on this river, at this time of year, can ruin you for a lot of other rivers.  It is absolutely beautiful in the flyfishing only waters.

My favorite patterns for the kalama -

wet: freight train, skunk, wooly bugger, purple peril
dry- grease liner, crystal caddis....I fish these as a skater with a riffle hitch.

There is a old video out on fly fishing for steelhead that Jim Teeny was in, that section of the river is in his video, its one of his favorite rivers to "sight fish"
