Dog Training
« on: January 29, 2012, 11:43:18 PM »
Since our GWP was hit by a car and had her leg amputated, I have been trying to think of other outdoors activities to do with her if grouse hunting proves to be too taxing on her.  Shed hunting crossed my mind, she can go at her own pace, and still get out and enjoy the woods and I can still bring the shot gun in case!

Any information on helping a dog learn to shed hunt would be great, I just want her out there enjoying life.....our beagle might enjoy it too, but I think she will just go barreling into the brush after rabbits....

I am no expert at training dogs to do this and hopefully somebody with experience could chime in but I'm currently trying to train my lab pup to do this also.  I bought the Antler dog videos by Roger Sigler and they walk you step by step through the process.  Her toys have always been sheds and so far has chewed three up to nothing, she don't really have the drive I think but she's been a good companion in the woods if anything.  She's also good about not chasing game which had me worried to take her out, but with every good opportunity shes had she has stuck by my side so I'm happy.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

I bet you will be surprised. I forget how old your dog is but I bet she is as good on 3 legs as four. Maybe steep terain will bother her . But gated logging roads and alder patches i bet will not slow her down. Watch her weight keep her lean and exercise her every day. Try her swmming in the summer but stay close. Make her strong she will hunt.
