High Buck Hunt

Does anyone know anything about Waptus and Pete lake areas. A guy at work told me that he used to hunt this area a few years back and encountered a few bucks over the years. Is it any good anymore?. I dont need to know any honeyholes just curious if the vicinity is any good. I am planning on a trip in there in mid August to check things out. Also is there any good fishing in the lakes?

Deep lake northeast of wapatus has some pretty good fishing as far as the hunting goes, LOTS OF REDCOATS!

my hunting but talks about great hunting around pete lake...but that was back in the 70's

i would guess you can run into some good deer in that area.

i would hazard a guess that the pete lake area would probably be pretty crowded for that hunt given the ease of access. it is a reallllyyyy easy hike.  i have never been in there for a hunt, but have hiked to it several times. it's pretty thick and dark timber in the pete lake area, have not been past it to waptus either. i do know of 1 good buck that was taken in that general area a few years ago.

Outfitter has hunts set up in there, probably not a good choice. That is a guidedhunt too so probably wouldnt be to welcome. I would head farther up north and get into the open stuff where you can glass well.

Well those lakes Waptus, Pete, Deep, etc along the Crest trail corridor get heavliy fished. If you want the nice fish get away from the beaten path. As for deer I never really seen much for big bucks(or should I say 3 point or better) but then I didn't spend lots of time glassing which is what you have to do. I am sure there are some around but get away from the crest trail. Now the goats in the Robin lakes area will pretty much follow you to bed.

Never hunted it, going in on Sunday for a horseback ride to pete lake.  It does look promising though for deer hunting up in the higher ridges, but down low is thick as already mentioned.  The local outfitter i think guides up there and does drop camps around waptus i think more so than pete lake area.  They take a few deer out of there i think, but nothing huge.

I wouldn't worry about the camp set up by Three Peaks Outfitters.  Their guided hunting camp is almost certainly doing archery elk from Sept. 8 - 21st.  Even if they are hunting modern rifle High Hunt they are their because that is where the best bucks are located.

The outfitter knows that they don't own the Wilderness still it probably a good idea to give them some space.  If you're close enough to smell their morning coffee, you probably popular.

an outfitter shouldnt have any problems with whoever wants to hunt public land. if he does, he shouldnt.

I think your absolutely right.  I hate it when fishing the rivers and the guides think that they own the river.  I know they gotta make a living, but public property is public...
