2011 Mt. St. Helens Wounded Warrior Elk Hunt video.
« on: January 02, 2012, 01:46:53 PM »
I sponsored a wounded warrior hunt this year. I worked with the WWIA (Wounded Warriors in Action) to arrange things. It was a great hunt, and will be doing this annually.
If interested, they are a non-profit CFC charity. The founder, John McDaniel, does not take a penny in salary. Everything he does is out of his own pocket. All donations and peoples time goes directly to the wounded warriors getting them out in the field.

Thanks brother.

A little back story.

For the 2010 season I did a "Has-been Jarhead elk camp".  It was a good camp, had buds come in from out of state (Florida and Philly were the long haulers). I mentioned to a couple of them that I would like to do something for these kids coming home that are a bit f^$%ed up. Purple heart recipients, not light duty comandos.
I was going to start off by contacting the Sgt Major of my old command and see if he could hook us up with a couple of deserving Marines.
Before I did, Brent (bud from Florida) emailed me after camp that he had a local friend do a duck hunt through WWIA.
So I contacted Colonel John McDaniel, and we got the ball rolling.
It worked out great.
The 2 Wounded Warriors that came to camp this year will be returning every year and act as Laisons with the wounded warriors that will be sent by WWIA.

I thought the stuff I saw on the Wounded Warrior deal were all guys missing limbs and mamed up pretty badly?  If these guys were hiking up the mountain and back every day, I'm guessing they weren't missing too many limbs?  What would really be a cool deal is to be able to get some late cow tags to dole out to some of the more disabled vets and actually take them on a hunt they couldn't otherwise do.  I'd be up for something like that!

Had 2 this year.
Josh lost his left eye and arms/hands were messed up pretty good. He is a medically retired Marine SSgt. Was turret gunner in a Humvee when hit with an IED in 07
John B is active duty right now. Command Sgt Major in the army stationed at Fort Lewis. Lost his leg just above the knee.

I would call neither of these guys disabled. Hard Corps to the bone.

As far as getting these guys tags, I spent the better part of last year dealing with WDFW trying to do just that - no go.  Got the "We can't give out anything to one group because then we would have to for all groups" excuse.

Awesome.  Keep it up.  Sounded like they had a good time too.
