Thought I would show off my new hunting partner
« on: January 03, 2012, 02:54:04 PM »
I have had her for a month now and she already loves to chase quail.  This was her third trip out and we managed to find and shoot two of speedy little buggers.  Sorry no pictures of the birds just her having fun. She is a wire hair pointer and her name is Daisey.

Cute dog.

So far she has been amazing.  She is 13 weeks old and she has these cammands down pat....sit, stay, wait, drop it, leave it, and come.  She does not really know how to retrieve yet, but we are working on that.  I have to get in the general vacinity of the downed bird and she will find it.  Today she found the bird and came to me (4 ft away) immediately.  I commanded, "drop it" and she layed the bird at my feet.  She recieved a full 60 seconds of praise for that one.  She will not run to far in front of me and is she does she will sit and wait for a hand command or me to catch up.  I couldn't be more pleased at this point.

Jrebel great choice in a hunting partner! Of course I am biased as I have a wirehair female (Sophie) also. I bought her and her brother at the same time and gave the brother to my dad. I had a shorthair before and talk about a night and day difference between the two. With my shorthair I spent countless hours reading books and training and with Sophie I just did the basics and the all the rest is natural with an unbelievable amount of energy and drive. She hunts from the time we leave the truck to the time that we get back. At home she wants to be a lap dog, but is a little to big for that. The only complaint that I have is that her hunting instincts never turn off and even though she knows the cat is off limits she still tries to take a bite out of him every know and then and she will not leave the chickens alone. Again great choice in a hunting partner.

Here is a pic of Sophie at about 9 months old after running over a covey of blues while on a hike:

What a looker!  Daisey AKA the envy of every bird hunter you know!

I love my girl Bonnie, also a GWP, she has so much personality, great with my daughter and other dog, the boyfriend said he wanted an outdoorsy dog and he grew up with shorthairs, so we went for a wirehair and what a great breed for everything.  She loves chasing birds, but since I have never owned a bird dog myself, I am not much help as far as teaching her how to hone her skills....
